Induced Sputum: Selection Method

2003
Sputum consists of a mixture of mucus, inflammatory and epithelial cells, and cellular degradation products from the lower respiratory tract. In normal subjects, the inflammatory cells are mainly neutrophils and macrophages, with small numbers of lymphocytes, eosinophils, mast cells, and basophils.

Induced sputum abnormalities in gas station attendants

International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health, 2021
To investigate inflammatory changes in the induced sputum (IS) of gas station attendants (GSAs) at risk of exposure to fuel vapors through inhalation and susceptible to respiratory complaints and impaired lung function.Hypertonic saline-IS was collected from 52 GSAs who had never smoked (42 men, age = 35.9 ± 8.9 years) and had no known comorbidities. Induced Sputum: Whole Sample

2003
With the introduction of fiberoptic bronchoscopy and the ability to carry out bronchoscopic biopsy and broncho-alveolar lavage (BAL) in patients and control subjects, characterisation of inflammation in airways diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive respiratory disease (COPD) has been possible.

Induced sputum in interstitial lung diseases

Current Opinion in Pulmonary Medicine, 2006
Induced sputum is a particularly useful procedure since it provides information on the cellular and molecular constituents in inflammation. Extensive work has demonstrated the application of induced sputum in the management of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and chronic bronchitis, but less attention has been paid to its efficacy in ...

Induced Sputum Cellularity

American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 2000
Sputum induction has recently been proposed as the only direct noninvasive method for measuring airway inflammatory indices. The reference values and the distribution of cells in induced sputum in a control population have not yet been well defined. We therefore evaluated data from a large number of healthy volunteers.

Clinical Applications of Induced Sputum

Chest, 2006
The development of standardized methods for sputum induction has improved the quality and reproducibility of sputum samples. This technique has been used to optimize samples in the investigation of pulmonary tuberculosis and lung cancer, but its clinical application as a noninvasive measure of airway inflammation has highlighted the enormous potential ...

Comparison of Two Methods of Processing Induced Sputum: Selected versus Entire Sputum

American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 1998
Sputum analysis is increasingly used to assess airway inflammation in asthma. The analysis of sputum is currently performed with two techniques, i.e., analysis of selected sputum (plugs) and analysis of entire sputum. To investigate the diagnostic value of these two methods, we compared total and differential cell counts and supernatant eosinophil ...

Diagnostic Yield of Sputum, Induced Sputum, and Bronchoscopy after Radiologic Tuberculosis Screening

American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, 2007
To assess feasibility and yield of diagnostic procedures after active case finding for tuberculosis with radiologic screening at the three main entry points for asylum seekers to Switzerland.Prospective multicenter study on the value of symptoms, spontaneous and induced sputum, and bronchoscopy for the confirmation of tuberculosis in radiologically ...

Induced sputum and response to glucocorticoids

Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, 1998
Jerry Dolovich has generated substantial new work that has had an international impact on the understanding and treatment of asthma and other airway diseases. For this, he is recognized as a Distinguished Clinician of the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology.
