Sleep: The hebbian reinforcement of the local inhibitory synapses [PDF]

open access: yesMedical Hypotheses, 2015
Sleep is ubiquitous among the animal realm, and represents about 30% of our lives. Despite numerous efforts, the reason behind our need for sleep is still unknown. The Theory of neuronal Cognition (TnC) proposes that sleep is the period of time during which the local inhibitory synapses (in particular the cortical ones) are replenished. Indeed, as long

Live imaging of inhibitory axons: Synapse formation as a dynamic trial-and-error process

open access: yes, 2017
In this review I discuss recent live imaging studies that demonstrate that synapses, and in particular inhibitory synapses, are highly dynamic structures.

New players tip the scales in the balance between excitatory and inhibitory synapses

open access: yesMolecular Pain, 2005
Synaptogenesis is a highly controlled process, involving a vast array of players which include cell adhesion molecules, scaffolding and signaling proteins, neurotransmitter receptors and proteins associated with the synaptic vesicle machinery.

Signaling at the inhibitory natural killer cell immune synapse regulates lipid raft polarization but not class I MHC clustering

open access: yes, 2001
Natural killer (NK) cell cytotoxicity is determined by a balance of positive and negative signals. Negative signals are transmitted by NK inhibitory receptors (killer immunoglobulin-like receptors, KIR) at the site of membrane apposition between an NK ...

Identification and characterization of cell adhesion molecules controlling synapse stability [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Neuronal circuits form the basis of a functional nervous system to process and integrate information and to react to environmental cues. The formation of functional synaptic connections between neurons is essential for the establishment of these circuits.

Path‐Decoupled Cation‐Eutaxy III–V van der Waals Memristive Semiconductors for Mitigating the Neuromorphic Accuracy‐Energy Trade‐off

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Path‐decoupled III–V van der Waals memtransistors spatially separate ionic and electronic transport to overcome the conventional trade‐off between accuracy and energy in neuromorphic hardware. Mobile K+ ions in the vdW gaps set a wide conductance window, Gmax/Gmin, while gate‐tunable hole conduction lowers programming energy, enabling reliable ...

The immunological synapse.

open access: yes, 2001
The adaptive immune response is initiated by the interaction of T cell antigen receptors with major histocompatibility complex molecule-peptide complexes in the nanometer scale gap between a T cell and an antigen-presenting cell, referred to as an ...

Bacteria‐Trained, MnO2‐Armored Dendritic Cells for Immunotherapy

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
MnO2‐armored, bacteria‐trained dendritic cells undergo tumor‐responsive mechanical and immunological transformation. The nanocoating masks immune ligands and maintains a mechanically stiff, quiescent state during circulation, while the tumor microenvironment removes the armor and restores cellular deformability and immune accessibility.
