Adaptation in the innate immune system and heterologous innate immunity

Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences, 2014
The innate immune system recognizes deviation from homeostasis caused by infectious or non-infectious assaults. The threshold for its activation seems to be established by a calibration process that includes sensing of microbial molecular patterns from commensal bacteria and of endogenous signals.

The aging innate immune system

Current Opinion in Immunology, 2005
Advanced age is associated with a breakdown of the epithelial barriers of the skin, lung and gastrointestinal tract, which enables invasion of delicate mucosal tissues by pathogenic organisms. Thus, there is an increased challenge for the innate immune system in aged subjects, as the portal of pathogen entry becomes more readily disturbed.

The immune memory of innate immune systems

International Immunology
Abstract Immune memory has long been considered a function specific to adaptive immune systems; however, adaptive immune memory alone has not fully explained the mechanism by which vaccines exert their protective effects against nontarget pathogens.

Role of innate immune system in the pathogenesis of ankylosing spondylitis.

Biomedicine & pharmacotherapy = Biomedecine & pharmacotherapie, 2018
Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a debilitating rheumatic disease that gives young adults a severe form of arthritis with pain and stiffness in the axial skeleton.

Innate immunity in the nervous system

2009
The complement (C) system plays a central role in innate immunity and bridges innate and adaptive immune responses. A fine balance of C activation and regulation mediates the elimination of invading pathogens and the protection of the host from excessive C deposition on healthy tissues.

The immune system in the elderly

Immunologic Research, 1999
The capability to cope with infectious agents and cancer cells resides not only in adaptive immune responses against specific antigens, mediated by T and B lymphocytes clonally distributed, but also in natural immune reactions. These innate defence mechanisms include chemotaxis, phagocytosis, natural cytotoxicity, cell interactions, and soluble ...

Innate immunity: a primitive system in humans

Immunology Today, 2000
Abstract A recent meeting*This symposium was sponsored by the Biochemical Society and full papers from the meeting will be published in the September 2000 issue of Biochemical Society Transactions [Vol. 28(5)]. * focused on the biochemical and functional events regulated by innate response molecules such as the complement system and Toll, and their ...

The innate immune system and HIV pathogenesis

Current HIV/AIDS Reports, 2005
Innate immunity represents the first line of defense against microbial infections. The innate immune system is activated by conserved structures present on most pathogens and profoundly regulates subsequent adaptive immune responses. HIV is notorious for evading and disrupting the immune system.
