Effects of Vector Density on Blood Parasite Spread and Health Consequences for Avian Hosts: An Experimental Epidemiology Blueprint

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
In an experimental epidemiology setup, groups of pigeons were exposed to different numbers of infective malaria vectors. Vector number explained the speed of transmission, the final prevalence, and changes in host behavior. ABSTRACT Vector density plays a critical role in the transmission dynamics of vector‐borne diseases and thus in their health and ...

Supplementing beef cattle diets with brown seaweed affects coprophagous beetles' dung use

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, EarlyView.
Supplementing beef cattle diets with brown seaweed reduced the attractiveness of dung for a common dung beetle (Onthophagus nuchicornis). Dietary supplementation with brown seaweed appeared to reduce the proportion of major males in the F1 generation.

Apparent digestibility of insect protein meals for rainbow trout

open access: yes, 2018
Insect meals are considered to be promising future ingredients for aquaculture feeds. In past feeding trials in rainbow trout, insect meals were included in diets only on the basis of their nutrients content and energy density without taking into account their biological availability due to the lack of their digestible values.

‘I like to dance with the flowers!’: Exploring the possibilities for biodiverse futures in an urban forest school

open access: yesChildren &Society, EarlyView.
Abstract This article explores the ways in which ‘forest school’, an educational approach where children engage in creative and play based activities in a ‘natural’ environment, can contribute towards Sustainable Development Goal 15 (SDG 15) by promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems and by helping address biodiversity loss. Drawing on data

Forage Plant Host and Early Feeding Choices Affect Spodoptera litura Feeding, Development and Egg‐Laying

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
We assessed Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) performance on five common pasture plant species. Larvae consumed more dock, plantain and chicory per day than red or white clover, but with lower conversion efficiencies. Feeding on red clover reduced weights and egg laying, and lengthened development times compared with plantain.

Effects of dietary replacement of fishmeal by defatted Tenebrio molitor meal, Clostridium autoethanogenum protein meal and Chlorella vulgaris meal on the freshness of turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) during chilled storage

open access: yesAquaculture Reports
The present work evaluated the effects of dietary fishmeal replacement with three non-food protein sources, including defatted Tenebrio molitor meal (TM), Clostridium autoethanogenum protein meal (CAP) and Chlorella vulgaris meal (CV), on the freshness ...
