No-cost meals might not exist for insects feeding on toxic plants

open access: yesBiology Open, 2023
ABSTRACTPlants produce chemicals (or plant specialised/secondary metabolites, PSM) to protect themselves against various biological antagonists. Herbivorous insects use plants in two ways: as a food source and as a defence source. Insects can detoxify and sequester PSMs in their bodies as a defence mechanism against predators and pathogens.

Excipient Emulsion–Based Delivery Systems for Enhancing Carotenoid Bioavailability: Advances in Formulation and Gastrointestinal Fate

open access: yesAgriFood: Journal of Agricultural Products for Food, EarlyView.
Excipient emulsion systems improve carotenoid solubilization, protect against degradation, and enhance gastrointestinal absorption through optimized formulation and digestion behavior. ABSTRACT Carotenoids are bioactive compounds that contribute to human health through antioxidant, provitamin A, and disease‐preventive effects.

Graded Incorporation of Defatted Yellow Mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) in Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) Diet Improves Growth Performance and Nutrient Retention

open access: yesAnimals, 2019
Insects are emerging as a sustainable alternative to fishmeal and fish oil in aquafeeds. This study assessed the effect of graded incorporation levels of defatted yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) protein meal on juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus ...

Are all meats substitutes? A basket‐and‐expenditure‐based approach

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
Abstract This study examines the relationship among animal‐based meat and plant‐based meat alternatives (PBMAs) using a basket‐and‐expenditure‐based choice experiment. In particular, we examine whether animal‐based meat products are substitutes or complements with PBMAs.

Utilization of Silkworm (Bombyx mori) pupae meal and Javanese bird grasshopper (Valanga nigricornis) meal as alternative protein sources to replace meat and bone meal in ruminant feed: An in vitro study

open access: yesVeterinary Integrative Sciences
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of replacing meat and bone meal (MBM) with insect-based protein sources, Silkworm pupae (Bombyx mori) meal (SPM), and Javanese bird grasshopper (Valanga nigricornis) meal (FGM) on rumen degradability ...

Detection of insect’s meal in compound feed by Near Infrared spectral imaging [PDF]

open access: yesFood Chemistry, 2018
Insects have recently emerged as a new protein source for both food and feed. Some studies have already demonstrated that insects' meal can be successfully added to animal feed without threaten animals' growth indices. However, effective and validated tests to individuate insects' meal in feed are strongly needed to meet traceability and safety ...

Exploring the Impact of Meat Alternative Labeling Regulations on the U.S. Meat Consumption Patterns

open access: yesAgribusiness, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The global demand for conventional meat continues to rise, but it is also associated with substantial environmental and health challenges. In response, meat alternatives have gained popularity, sparking debates over meat alternative labeling regulations. This study investigates the effects of meat alternative labeling regulations in the United

Reverse chemical ecology approach for the identification of an oviposition attractant for Culex quinquefasciatus. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Pheromones and other semiochemicals play a crucial role in today's integrated pest and vector management strategies. These semiochemicals are typically discovered by bioassay-guided approaches.
