Molecular regulation of hormone secretion, growth and apoptosis of GLP-1-producing cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) spreads like an epidemic in today’s society, and there is a great need for new and improved treatments. T2D is characterized by hyperglycemia, resulting from impaired insulin production and insulin resistance in peripheral ...

Patient-derived pancreas-on-a-chip to model cystic fibrosis-related disorders

open access: yesNature Communications, 2019
Defective CFTR protein, responsible for Cystic Fibrosis (CF), is highly expressed in pancreatic ductal epithelial cells (PDECs) but their impact on insulin secreting pancreatic islets is not fully understood.

Bioengineering a Patient‐Derived Vascularized Lung Tumor‐on‐Chip Model to Decipher Immunomodulation by the Endothelium

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Most in vitro cancer models lack cellular diversity, functional complexity, and clinical relevance. This work highlights the generation of an innovative dynamic tetraculture with autologous patient‐derived cells within a vascularized tumor‐on‐chip, as well as the recapitulation of endothelial anergy features induced by the tumor microenvironment ...

Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy in Diabetes Mellitus: Progress and Challenges

open access: yesJournal of Nucleic Acids, 2013
Advanced type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with significant morbidity and mortality due to cardiovascular, nervous, and renal complications. Attempts to cure diabetes mellitus using islet transplantation have been successful in providing a source ...

Rapid Deep Vat Printing Using Photoclickable Collagen‐Based Bioresins

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Collagen‐based resin formulations based on thiol‐ene photoclick chemistry are demonstrated. These resins enable easy handleability under neutral conditions and further allow facile fabrication of multicellular tissue constructs via tomographic or FLight printing.

Expression and function of ATP-dependent potassium channels in zebrafish islet β-cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
ATP-sensitive potassium channels (K(ATP) channels) are critical nutrient sensors in many mammalian tissues. In the pancreas, K(ATP) channels are essential for coupling glucose metabolism to insulin secretion.

Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus and Its Main Complications: From Experimental Findings to Clinical Practice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is a complex multifactorial disorder which involves a loss of self-tolerance leading to the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic β−cells.

Voltage-Gated Na+ Channels are Modulated by Glucose and Involved in Regulating Cellular Insulin Content of INS-1 Cells

open access: yesCellular Physiology and Biochemistry, 2018
Background/Aims: Islet beta cells (β-cells) are unique cells that play a critical role in glucose homeostasis by secreting insulin in response to increased glucose levels. Voltage-gated ion channels in β-cells, such as K+ and Ca2+ channels, contribute to

Glutamate pathways of the beta-cell and the control of insulin secretion

open access: yesDiabetes Research and Clinical Practice, 2017
Pancreatic beta-cells secrete insulin in response to circulating glucose, thereby maintaining euglycemia. Inside the beta-cell, glucose is transformed into intracellular signals stimulating exocytosis. While calcium is an obligatory messenger, this ion is not sufficient to promote the full secretory response.
