Insulin/insulin like growth factors in cancer: new roles for the aryl hydrocarbon receptor, tumor resistance mechanisms and new blocking strategies

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology, 2015
The insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R) and the insulin receptor (IR) are receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) that are expressed in cancer cells. The results of different studies indicate that tumor proliferation and survival is dependent on the ...

Immune and metabolic changes leading to diabetes

open access: yes, 2012
PhDEnvironmental factors are strong determinants of diabetes-predictive biomarkers. We found these environmentally-determined biomarkers included, advanced glycation end-product serum carboxymethyl lysine (CML), a glycotoxin and diabetes-associated ...

Immunochemical analysis of illegal steroid growth promoters in cattle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Steroid hormones and their analogues can be used as growth promoters in cattle. The use of these substances is banned in the EU, and hence each member state must ensure that cattle are not being dosed with these drugs.

Placental transfer of insulin-binding antibodies in the guinea pig

open access: yes, 1963
Insulin-binding antibodies were demonstrated in the serum of fetuses and newborn of insulin-treated guinea pigs. The antibody concentrations in fetal and maternal sera were comparable.

Noradrenergic and Cholinergic Reinnervation of Islet Grafts in Diabetic Rats [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
Grafted islets become denervated due to the islet transplantation procedure. The aim of the present study was 1) to examine whether islet grafts in the liver, the spleen, and under the kidney capsule in rats become reinnervated following the ...

Chamber‐Specific Decellularized Extracellular Matrices Differentially Modulate Cardiomyocyte Subtypes to Drive Engineered Heart Tissue Development and Function

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Chamber‐specific decellularized extracellular matrices (ECMs) were developed, preserving native proteomic profiles of ventricular and atrial myocardium. These innate biochemical cues differentially modulate cardiomyocyte subtypes to drive engineered heart tissue development and function, highlighting the importance of incorporating regional ECM cues in

Coaxially Electrospun Myocardial dECM‐ Based Nanofibrous Scaffolds Demonstrate Enhanced Cardiomyocyte Biocompatibility

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Our coaxial electrospinning system is capable of incorporating decellularized myocardial extracellular matrix in a core‐sheath configuration, creating nanofibrous scaffolds. These scaffolds, in turn, support the maintenance of functional cardiomyocytes adhered to the surface of these bioactive scaffolds.

Evaluation of anti insulin receptor antibodies as potential novel therapies for human insulin receptoropathy

open access: yes, 2017
Biallelic loss-of-function mutations in the insulin receptor (INSR) commonly cause extreme insulin resistance and early mortality. Therapeutic options are limited, but anti-INSR antibodies have previously been shown to activate two mutant receptors. This

Multidimensional Cellular Micro‐Compartments to Model Invasive Lobular Carcinoma Dormancy

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is an understudied subtype of breast cancer that is susceptible to late recurrences. In this study, micro‐compartmentalization techniques spanning multiple dimensions, including 2D, pseudo‐3D, and 3D, are integrated to uncover the mechanisms underlying ILC dormancy, revealing the central role of p27Kip1.
