Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Difficulties of stable metabolic compensation of type 1 diabetes mellitus in adolescents

open access: yesЛечащий Врач, 2021
The purpose of this report is to discuss the main factors that prevent the stable metabolic compensation of type 1 diabetes mellitus in adolescents, which must be taken into account in the management of the patient, the selection and control of therapy ...

Minimizing Hypoglycemia with Insulin Therapy: The “THINK” Strategy

open access: yesChronicle of Diabetes Research and Practice, 2022
Iatrogenic hypoglycemia is the most feared and common complication of insulin therapy. Hypoglycemia can have serious consequences and can be potentially life-threatening. In addition to the neurological manifestations of severe hypoglycemia, hypoglycemia

Investigating transcription factor dynamics in health and disease using FRAP

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
FRAP analysis of GFP‐tagged transcription factors reveals how molecular mobility and target engagement change in response to drug treatment. By combining live‐cell imaging, quantitative model fitting, and statistical analysis, this approach uncovers transcription factor dynamics linked to disease mechanisms, providing a powerful framework for ...

Psychological insulin resistance among patients with diabetes mellitus in Botswana

open access: yesAfrican Journal of Primary Health Care & Family Medicine
Background: Timely initiation of insulin therapy is vital in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, insulin initiation may be delayed because of psychological insulin resistance (PIR).

Insulin coma therapy [PDF]

open access: yesThe Psychiatric Bulletin, 2014
Anyone working in an insulin unit in the 1950s would not recognise Dr Pimm’s account of the results of their treatment,1 or details of what it involved. The patients received daily and increasing doses of insulin, rising to many hundreds of units, for a 6-week period.

Discerning protein pools by selective staining with self‐labeling tags

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cell surface proteins have an intra‐ and extracellular pool. Combining genetic fusion to self‐labeling tags that can be addressed with small molecule fluorophores allows separating these pools. We highlight recent developments and techniques for state‐of‐the‐art interrogation of cell surface proteins in the complex tissue setting.

Influence of Insulin Pen Needle Geometry on Pain Perception and Patient’s Acceptability: A Review

open access: yesTechnologies
Diabetes is one of the most common diseases worldwide, with an increasing number of people affected. Insulin therapy is still the major treatment for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and has evolved from bulky syringes to modern insulin pens introduced in
