Interferon alpha-2 enhances slow-wave sleep in rabbits

Interferon alpha-2 (IFN) is a leukocyte product with several biological properties including antiviral activity, pyrogenicity and enhancement of immune functions. We report here that an additional facet of IFN activity is its ability to enhance slow-wave sleep (SWS) without greatly altering other aspects of sleep.

Hairy cell leukemia and mucormycosis. Treatment with alpha-2 interferon

Right maxillary sinus mucormycosis developed in a 45-year-old patient with hairy cell leukemia and pancytopenia. The patient recovered with surgical debridement, amphotericin therapy, and institution of alpha-2 interferon as therapy for his hairy cell leukemia.

Topical recombinant alpha-2 interferon treatment of recurrent genital herpes was studied in a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled clinical trial. Cortisol stimulation by recombinant interferon-α2

Serum cortisol concentrations were determined by radioimmunoassay in cancer patients undergoing experimental therapy with recombinant interferon-alpha 2. Cortisol concentration rose steadily after interferon administration and was significantly different from that on control day at 8 h following intramuscular injection of interferon-alpha 2.

Some patients treated with interferon (IFN) have developed antibodies (ABs) to that IFN. We examined the incidence of such ABs in hairy cell leukemia (HCL) patients treated with IFN-alpha 2a and IFN-alpha 2b. Summary Of 38 patients with a Philadelphia‐chromosome positive chronic myeloid leukaemia treated with recombinant interferon alpha (rIFN‐α) 2a or 2b and monitored for emergence of IFN‐antibodies in their sera 11 patients developed rIFN‐α2 binding and 10 rIFN‐α2 neutralizing antibodies.

Porcine leukocyte interferon exhibits close antigenic relatedness to human interferon alpha 2, but not to human interferon alpha 1

As reported by others using polyclonal antisera, natural human and porcine interferons (IFN)-alpha are antigenically related. Using monoclonal antibodies (mAb) in neutralization and ELISA experiments, we found differences in the subtype/antigenic composition between virus-induced porcine and human leukocyte preparations.
