Interferons and Interferon Inducers

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1973
The fascinating field of the interferons is thoroughly reviewed and brought up to date in this fine volume in the series, Frontiers of Biology . Though a multiauthored presentation, it contains surprisingly little redundancy, a compliment to the editor, N. B. Finter.

The Effect of Interferon and Interferon Inducers on Avian Influenza

Journal of Infectious Diseases, 1971
The effects of interferon and interferon inducers on infection due to avian influenza virus in six-week-old chickens was studied after intratracheal administration of virus. Influenza A, avian type 5 T/ONT/6828 was shown to be as sensitive as bovine vesicular stomatitis virus to the antiviral activity of chicken interferon, polyriboinosinic ...

Interferons and interferon-induced antiviral proteins in the testis

Journal of Reproductive Immunology, 1998
Despite the dramatic development of sexually transmissible diseases, the antiviral capabilities of testicular cells have not yet been explored. Interferons (IFNs) are proteins playing a key role in the antiviral defense system, their activity being mediated by several IFN-induced proteins.

Interferons and Interferon Inducers

Drugs, 1982
Interferons are broadly antiviral, naturally occurring substances, whose exact mechanism of action on virus infections is unknown. Major limitations on the quantities of interferon available for clinical trials have inhibited its development as a therapeutic agent. The variable nature of virus infections in certain patient populations has also produced

Induction of interferons and interferon-induced genes

Biotherapy, 1996
Type I IFNs (IFN-α, IFN-β, and IFN-ω) are produced in most cell types upon virus infection and upon stimulation by dsRNA (with exceptions of embryonal carcinoma cells which are defective in expressing IFN genes). In addition, certain growth factors and lymphokines such as IL-1, colony stimulating factor (CSF), and TNF also induce type I IFNs.

Macrophage Activation by Interferon or Interferon Inducers

1980
There are at least three types of mechanism which singly or in combination may underlie macrophage activation by an administered agent: 1) the agent may directly affect macrophages or macrophage precursors; 2) the agent may trigger the complement, clotting, or plasminogen cascades to generate effector molecules which in turn affect the function of ...

Interferon and Interferon Inducers: The Clinical Outlook

Hospital Practice, 1969
To what extent is interferon fulfilling its promise as a “broad-spectrum” antiviral agent? Current research suggests that stimulation of host interferon by inducers, rather than direct administration, will be the method by which interferon's properties are exploited.
