Histopathology of the gut in rheumatic diseases [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The gastrointestinal tract regulates the trafficking of macromolecules between the environment and the host through an epithelial barrier mechanism and is an important part of the immune system controlling the equilibrium between tolerance and immunity ...

Cytoplasmic p21 promotes stemness of colon cancer cells via activation of the NFκB pathway

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Cytoplasmic p21 promotes colorectal cancer stem cell (CSC) features by destabilizing the NFκB–IκB complex, activating NFκB signaling, and upregulating BCL‐xL and COX2. In contrast to nuclear p21, cytoplasmic p21 enhances spheroid formation and stemness transcription factor CD133.

Association of Interleukin 23 Receptor Gene with Sarcoidosis [PDF]

open access: yesDisease Markers, 2011
Interleukin 23 receptor (IL23R) gene has been reported as a genetic factor strongly associated with inflammatory bowel disease, psoriasis, and ankylosing spondylitis. We investigated the association betweenIL23Rgene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and susceptibility to sarcoidosis, including the clinical manifestation of uveitis.Ninety-one ...

Interleukin-23 receptor gene polymorphisms in osteoporosis

open access: yesThe European Research Journal, 2023
Objectives: Osteoporosis (OP) is a usual disease with a possible genetic predisposition. IL-23 plays a role in physiological bone remodeling and regulates the activity of cells of the bone either directly or indirectly on bone-resorbing osteoclasts as well as on bone-forming osteoblasts.

Targeting inflammation to reduce cardiovascular disease risk: a realistic clinical prospect? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Data from basic science experiments is overwhelmingly supportive of the causal role of immune-inflammatory response(s) at the core of atherosclerosis, and therefore the theoretical potential to manipulate the inflammatory response to prevent ...

In vitro models of cancer‐associated fibroblast heterogeneity uncover subtype‐specific effects of CRISPR perturbations

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Development of therapies targeting cancer‐associated fibroblasts (CAFs) necessitates preclinical model systems that faithfully represent CAF–tumor biology. We established an in vitro coculture system of patient‐derived pancreatic CAFs and tumor cell lines and demonstrated its recapitulation of primary CAF–tumor biology with single‐cell transcriptomics ...

Uncovering how interleukin-5 and interleukin-23 shape human immune defense against Salmonella enterica Typhi

open access: yesJournal of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases
Background: Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi remains a major global health concern, particularly in regions with limited resources. Interleukins such as interleukin-5 and interleukin-23 are thought to play pivotal roles in shaping the host's ...

Vitamin D inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokines in the airways of cystic fibrosis patients infected by Pseudomonas aeruginosa- pilot study

open access: yesItalian Journal of Pediatrics, 2019
Background Vitamin D plays an important role in inflammatory responses after antigen exposure. Interleukin-23 (Il-23) promotes Il-17-dependent inflammation during Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) pulmonary infection. We aimed to compare the ability

Perspectives on the Genetic Associations of Ankylosing Spondylitis

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2021
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a common form of inflammatory spinal arthritis with a complex polygenic aetiology. Genome-wide association studies have identified more than 100 loci, including some involved in antigen presentation (HLA-B27, ERAP1, and ...

Interleukin-23/Th17 pathways and inflammatory bowel disease [PDF]

open access: yesInflammatory Bowel Diseases, 2009
The IL-23/Th17 pathway has recently been identified to play a critical role in a number of chronic inflammatory diseases including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The identification in IBD patients of associations in IL23R and regions that include other genes in the IL-23/Th17 pathway has highlighted the importance of proper IL-23/Th17 pathway ...
