Reactivation of contraction in detergent-lysed teleost retinal cones. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1982
Teleost retinal cones contract in the light and elongate in the dark. In the green sunfish, Lepomis cyanellus, the necklike myoid region of the cone contracts from as much as 120 micrometers (midnight dark-adapted) to 6 micrometers in fully light-adapted

Micropleated Nanofibrous Filters for High‐Efficiency Submicron Aerosol Filtration: A Comparative Study with Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Gas Mask Filters

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents micropleated filters manufactured by needleless electrospinning. Nanofibers are deposited onto uniaxially pre‐stretched substrates that contract upon release, forming densely packed micropleats. This architecture increases effective surface area without enlarging the filter size, achieving quality factors comparable to those of ...

Vimentin is a key regulator of cell mechanosensing through opposite actions on actomyosin and microtubule networks

open access: yesCommunications Biology
The cytoskeleton is a complex network of interconnected biopolymers consisting of actin filaments, microtubules, and intermediate filaments. These biopolymers work in concert to transmit cell-generated forces to the extracellular matrix required for cell

Neurofilaments: Properties, Functions, and Regulation - Springer [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Neuronal intermediate filaments are the most prominent cytoskeleton component of adult neurons in both central and peripheral nervous system. They include neurofilament triplet proteins, peripherin, α-internexin, nestin, and synemin.

Theory of Crosslinked Bundles of Helical Filaments: Intrinsic Torques in Self-Limiting Biopolymer Assemblies

open access: yes, 2011
Inspired by the complex influence of the globular crosslinking proteins on the formation of biofilament bundles in living organisms, we study and analyze a theoretical model for the structure and thermodynamics of bundles of helical filaments assembled ...

Adaptable Tile‐Based Pneumatic Origami through Structurally Coupled Localized Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents tile‐based pneumatic origami structures with rigid tiles and flexible fabric creases, achieving adaptable properties including morphing shape, selective multistability, and tunable stiffness. Independently pressurized folding bladders at each crease enable structurally coupled localized actuation of origami structures.

Hybrid Auxetic Architectures: Integrating Curvature‐Driven Design for Enhanced Mechanical Tunability and Structural Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Curvature‐tuned auxetic lattices are designed, fabricated, and mechanically characterized to reveal how geometric curvature governs stretchability, stress redistribution, and Poisson's ratio evolution. Photoelastic experiments visualize stress pathways, while hyperelastic simulations quantify deformation mechanics.
