Gastric bypass reversal in patients with short bowel syndrome

open access: yesIntestinal Failure
Background: 5–10 % patients developing short bowel syndrome (SBS) have undergone a previous gastric bypass (GBP) for morbid obesity. The benefits of restoring gastric anatomy in these patients is assumed but remains unclear.

Nuclear pore links Fob1‐dependent rDNA damage relocation to lifespan control

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Damaged rDNA accumulates at a specific perinuclear interface that couples nucleolar escape with nuclear envelope association. Nuclear pores at this site help inhibit Fob1‐induced rDNA instability. This spatial organization of damage handling supports a functional link between nuclear architecture, rDNA stability, and replicative lifespan in yeast.

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Perspectives of intestinal rehabilitation providers on the use of oral rehydration solutions for pediatric patients with short bowel syndrome

open access: yesIntestinal Failure
Background: Patients with short bowel syndrome (SBS) have a loss of absorptive bowel surface area and are at risk for dehydration. Oral rehydration solutions (ORS) promote intestinal fluid absorption and may be used to maintain adequate hydration ...

Suppression of lung adenocarcinoma migration through organelle alkalization by human lactoferrin – albumin fusion

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This paper reveals how human lactoferrin–albumin fusion (hLF‐HSA) potently suppresses lung adenocarcinoma cell migration. hLF‐HSA upregulates NHE7, leading to Golgi alkalization, disruption of the Golgi secretome, downregulation of MMP1, and reversal of EMT. These findings suggest a novel Golgi‐targeting strategy to suppress cancer cell migration.

A neonatal intensive care nurse experience of an automated chyme reinfusion therapy device: A case report describing use in a neonate with necrotising enterocolitis

open access: yesIntestinal Failure
Background: Neonatal intestinal failure related to double enterostomies is rare and associated with high morbidity and mortality. Chyme reinfusion therapy (CRT) remediates high outputs and improves nutrition and electrolyte balance of neonates.

YIPFα1A expression is regulated by multilayered molecular mechanisms

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
YIPFα1A, a five‐pass Golgi protein, is regulated at multiple layers. (1) Rare‐codon enrichment drives translation‐coupled mRNA decay. (2) A proximal 3′‐UTR element stabilizes mRNA. (3) A distal 3′‐UTR element included by alternate poly(A) site usage represses translation, which can be overridden by the proximal 3′‐UTR element.

Combination of anti-TNFα therapy and surgical resection for severe chronic intestinal rejection: A case report

open access: yesIntestinal Failure
Background: Acute cellular rejection (ACR) is a well-recognised cause of graft failure in intestinal transplant (ITx) recipients. Management of ACR is with intravenous (IV) steroids, increased immunosuppression and T-cell depleting therapies.

RoundMi: A quantitative method to analyze mitochondrial morphology in mitotic cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
RoundMi is a workflow for rapid analysis of mitochondrial morphology in mitotic cells. By combining adaptive preprocessing with automated segmentation and quantification, it enables accurate measurements from single focal plane images, reducing acquisition time and computational demands while remaining compatible with high‐throughput fixed and live ...
