N-acetyl glucosamine improves intestinal mucosal barrier function in rat

open access: yes, 2012
Our study investigated the effect of N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) on the intestinal mucosal barrier function in rats. Rats were randomly assigned into normal control group, diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) group and GlcNAc group. IBS-

Image_1_The Association of Altered Gut Microbiota and Intestinal Mucosal Barrier Integrity in Mice With Heroin Dependence.tif

open access: yes, 2021
The gut microbiota is believed to play a significant role in psychological and gastrointestinal symptoms in heroin addicts. However, the underlying mechanism remains largely unknown. We show here that heroin addicts had a decrease in body mass index (BMI)

Bacterial colonization and intestinal mucosal barrier development

open access: yesWorld Journal of Clinical Pediatrics, 2013
The intestinal tract is colonized soon after birth with a variety of ingested environmental and maternal microflora. This process is influenced by many factors including mode of delivery, diet, environment, and the use of antibiotics. Normal intestinal microflora provides protection against infection, ensures tolerance to foods, and contributes to ...

Protein hydrolysates from animal source food earthworm protect against dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced intestinal barrier injury

open access: yesFood Science and Human Wellness
The intestinal barrier is crucial for homeostasis. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of earthworm protein hydrolysates (EWPH) on the intestinal mucosal barrier and elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

Modulation of Gut Barrier Functions in Ulcerative Colitis by Hyaluronic Acid System

open access: yesAdvanced Science, 2022
The active stages of intestinal inflammation and the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis are associated with superficial mucosal damage and intermittent wounding that leads to epithelial barrier defects and increased permeability. The standard therapeutic

Intestinal Permeability in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Pathogenesis, Clinical Evaluation, and Therapy of Leaky Gut

open access: yesMediators of Inflammation, 2015
The pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is multifactorial with data suggesting the role of a disturbed interaction between the gut and the intestinal microbiota.

Effect of Cordyceps militaris Powder Prophylactic Supplementation on Intestinal Mucosal Barrier Impairment and Microbiota-Metabolites Axis in DSS-Injured Mice

open access: yes, 2023
Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic and recurrent inflammatory disease with an unknown pathogenesis and increasing incidence. The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of prophylactic treatment with Cordyceps militaris on UC. The findings

Lactobacillus reuteri Promotes Intestinal Development and Regulates Mucosal Immune Function in Newborn Piglets

open access: yesFrontiers in Veterinary Science, 2020
Intestinal microbiota is necessary for the guarantee of intestinal mucosal barrier. However, the detailed effect of probiotics on porcine intestinal development, especially in the early life, is still unclear.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
