Inhibiting stearoyl‐CoA desaturase suppresses bone metastatic prostate cancer by modulating cellular stress, mTOR signaling, and DNA damage response

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Bone metastasis in prostate cancer (PCa) patients is a clinical hurdle due to the poor understanding of the supportive bone microenvironment. Here, we identify stearoyl‐CoA desaturase (SCD) as a tumor‐promoting enzyme and potential therapeutic target in bone metastatic PCa.

Helicoidal instability of a scroll vortex in three-dimensional reaction-diffusion systems

open access: yes, 1998
We study the dynamics of scroll vortices in excitable reaction-diffusion systems analytically and numerically. We demonstrate that intrinsic three-dimensional instability of a straight scroll leads to the formation of helicoidal structures. This behavior

Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Revealing violations of macrorealism in flavor oscillations: Leggett-Garg inequalities and no-signaling-in-time conditions [PDF]

open access: yesEPJ Web of Conferences
. We briefly review recent developments in the study of the quantum nature of flavor mixing; in particular, the attention will be devoted to neutrino and neutral meson oscillations.

Atomistic origins of the phase transition mechanism in Ge2Sb2Te5

open access: yes, 2009
Combined static and molecular dynamics first-principles calculations are used to identify a direct structural link between the metastable crystalline and amorphous phases of Ge2Sb2Te5. We find that the phase transition is driven by the displacement of Ge

Characterizing the salivary RNA landscape to identify potential diagnostic, prognostic, and follow‐up biomarkers for breast cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study explores salivary RNA for breast cancer (BC) diagnosis, prognosis, and follow‐up. High‐throughput RNA sequencing identified distinct salivary RNA signatures, including novel transcripts, that differentiate BC from healthy controls, characterize histological and molecular subtypes, and indicate lymph node involvement.

Intrinsic instability of sonic white holes

open access: yes, 2002
Artificial black holes, such as sonic holes in Bose-Einstein condensates, may give insights into the role of the physics at the event horizon beyond the Planck scale. We show that sonic white holes give rise to a discrete spectrum of instabilities that is insensitive to the analogue of trans-Planckian physics for Bose-Einstein condensates.

Alu elements: an intrinsic source of human genome instability [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Opinion in Virology, 2013
Alu elements are ∼300bp sequences that have amplified via an RNA intermediate leading to the accumulation of over 1 million copies in the human genome. Although a few of the copies are active, Alu germline activity is the highest of all human retrotransposons and does significantly contribute to genetic disease and population diversity.

Thermodynamics and the intrinsic stability of lead halide perovskites CH3NH3PbX3 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The role of thermodynamics in assessing the intrinsic instability of the CH3NH3PbX3 perovskites (X = Cl,Br,I) is outlined on the basis of the available experimental information.

Class IIa HDACs forced degradation allows resensitization of oxaliplatin‐resistant FBXW7‐mutated colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
HDAC4 is degraded by the E3 ligase FBXW7. In colorectal cancer, FBXW7 mutations prevent HDAC4 degradation, leading to oxaliplatin resistance. Forced degradation of HDAC4 using a PROTAC compound restores drug sensitivity by resetting the super‐enhancer landscape, reprogramming the epigenetic state of FBXW7‐mutated cells to resemble oxaliplatin ...
