Dynamic Fracture Instability Of Tough Bulk Metallic Glass [PDF]
We report the observations of a clear fractographic evolution from vein pattern, dimple structure, and then to periodic corrugation structure, followed by microbranching pattern, along the crack propagation direction in the dynamic fracture of a tough ...

The Yih Instability in Layered Lava Flow May Initiate the Pāhoehoe to ‘a‘ā Lava Transition
Most basaltic lavas begin flowing as pāhoehoe but sometimes transition into ‘a‘ā. Field observations and previous models have demonstrated that the rheology of smooth, liquid‐like pāhoehoe is distinct from rough, pasty ‘a‘ā, but the cause of this ...

Intrinsic instabilities in Fermi glasses
We study in this paper the effect of weak, short-ranged interaction on disordered metals. Through analysing the interaction matrix elements between different eigenstates of the non-interacting and corresponding Hartree-Fock single-particle Hamiltonian, we argue that as a result of localized single-particle eigenstates around the Fermi surface, the ...

The Concentration Intrinsic Instability for Crystal Growth in Diffusion Process
The coupling of mass diffusion in a solution (or a melt) and the kinetic process on the solidification interface is described by a linear diffusion equation with the appropriate linear boundary conditions (J. Crystal Growth 8 (1971) 79).

Intrinsic surface superconducting instability in Type-I Weyl Semimetals
Recent experiments on non-magnetic Weyl semimetals have seen separate bulk and surface superconductivity in Weyl semimetals, which raises the question of whether the surface Fermi arcs can support intrinsic superconductivity while the bulk stays in the ...

Analytic study of intrinsic flame and coupled intrinsic-acoustic instabilities in combustor models [PDF]
The study is concerned with theoretical examination of thermo-acoustic instabilities in combustors and focuses on recently discovered flame intrinsic modes. These modes differ qualitatively from the thoroughly studied acoustic modes in a combustor. Despite being intensely studied, primarily numerically and experimentally, their properties remain poorly

Tumour–host interactions in Drosophila: mechanisms in the tumour micro‐ and macroenvironment
This review examines how tumour–host crosstalk takes place at multiple levels of biological organisation, from local cell competition and immune crosstalk to organism‐wide metabolic and physiological collapse. Here, we integrate findings from Drosophila melanogaster studies that reveal conserved mechanisms through which tumours hijack host systems to ...

Alu elements: an intrinsic source of human genome instability [PDF]
Alu elements are ∼300bp sequences that have amplified via an RNA intermediate leading to the accumulation of over 1 million copies in the human genome. Although a few of the copies are active, Alu germline activity is the highest of all human retrotransposons and does significantly contribute to genetic disease and population diversity.
