Water‐saving strategies in rice farming entail cascading effects in prey–predator interactions across ecosystem boundaries

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 9, Page 2273-2282, September 2025.
These results show that introducing multiple drainage periods in rice fields (i.e. AWD) indirectly hampers terrestrial spider reproduction through limiting the emergence of potential preys from the aquatic to terrestrial boundaries. MSD resulted in a more conciliatory strategy as it largely reduces methane emissions and does not affect predator–prey ...

Functional traits and soil water availability shape competitive interactions in a diploid–polyploid complex

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 113, Issue 9, Page 2332-2345, September 2025.
Our study emphasises that the long‐term fate of polyploids largely depends on water availability, with high polyploids having a competitive advantage in arid environments. This ultimately highlights the role of functional traits in shaping the competitive dynamics between cytotypes.

Vegetative stage and soil horizon respectively determine direction and magnitude of rhizosphere priming effects in contrasting tree line soils

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 38, Issue 9, Page 1984-2002, September 2024.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Tree lines in high latitudes and high altitudes are considered sentinels of global change. This manifests in accelerated encroachment of trees and shrubs and enhanced plant productivity, with currently unknown implications for the carbon balance of these biomes.

Plant geographic distribution influences chemical defences in native and introduced Plantago lanceolata populations

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 38, Issue 4, Page 883-896, April 2024.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Plants growing outside their native range may be confronted by new regimes of herbivory, but how this affects plant chemical defence profiles has rarely been studied.

Insect herbivory but not plant pathogen infection drive floral volatile‐mediated indirect effects on pollinators and plant fitness in Brassica rapa

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 112, Issue 2, Page 402-415, February 2024.
Plants subjected to herbivory by the aphid Brevicoryne brassicae exhibited a marked reduction in the emission of two volatile organic compounds (nonanal and 2‐butyl‐1‐octanol), experienced lower pollinator visits and produced seeds of lower quality in terms of seed biomass and germination rate.

Sequential Sampling for Frankíníell aoccidentalis (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) on protected blackberries (Rubus glaucus Senth) Muestreo secuencial para trips Frankíniella occídentalís (Pergande) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), en un cultivo de mora (Rubus glaucus Senth.) bajo invernadero

open access: yesAgronomía Colombiana, 1995
To stablish a permanent sampling program for Focidentalis (Pergande) populations, we sampled during six weeks, different reproductive structures of blackberry at a commercial crop in a plastic house.
