Beyond Global Mechanical Properties: Bioinspired Triply‐Periodic Minimal Surface Cellular Solids for Efficient Mechanical Design and Optimization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Using novel probe‐based metrics, this study evaluates lattice structures on criteria critical to cellular solid optimization. Triply‐periodic minimal surface (TPMS) lattices outperform other lattices, offering more predictable mechanical behavior in complex design spaces and, as a result, higher performance in optimized models.

Unexpected invasion of miniature inverted-repeat transposable elements in viral genomes

open access: yesMobile DNA, 2018
Background Transposable elements (TEs) are common and often present with high copy numbers in cellular genomes. Unlike in cellular organisms, TEs were previously thought to be either rare or absent in viruses.

Scalable Fabrication of Height‐Variable Microstructures with a Revised Wetting Model

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Height‐variable microstructures are fabricated using a scalable CO2 laser machining approach, enabling precise control of wettability through structural gradients. Classical wetting models fail to capture height‐induced effects, necessitating a revised theoretical framework.

Exploring Dipolar Dynamics and Ionic Transport in Metal‐Organic Frameworks: Experimental and Theoretical Insights

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, the interplay of dipolar dynamics and ionic charge transport in MOF compounds is investigated. Synthesizing the novel structure CFA‐25 with integrated freely rotating dipolar groups, local and macroscopic effects, including interactions with Cs cations are explored.

Crystal structure of undecaprenyl-pyrophosphate phosphatase and its role in peptidoglycan biosynthesis

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
Bacterial cell wall components are assembled in a transmembrane cycle that involves the membrane integral pyrophosphorylase, BacA. Here the authors solve the crystal structure of BacA which shows an interdigitated inverted topology repeat that hints ...

Magnetic Field‐Assisted Conductive Nerve Guidance Conduit Enabling Peripheral Nerve Regeneration with Wireless Electrical Stimulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a conductive nerve guidance conduit integrated with wireless electrical stimulation through alternating magnetic fields, which induces currents and creates a supportive microenvironment for nerve regeneration. In vivo studies show that this approach significantly enhanced myelin restoration, gastrocnemius muscle regeneration ...

Hairpin Plum pox virus coat protein (hpPPV-CP) structure in ‘HoneySweet’ C5 plum provides PPV resistance when genetically engineered into plum (Prunus domestica) seedlings [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The genetically engineered plum ‘HoneySweet’ (aka C5) has proven to be highly resistant to Plum pox virus (PPV) for over 10 years in field trials. The original vector used for transformation to develop ‘HoneySweet’ carried a single sense sequence of the ...
