Impact of treatment with iron chelation therapy in patients with lower-risk myelodysplastic syndromes participating in the European MDS registry

open access: yesHaematologica, 2020
Iron overload due to red blood cell (RBC) transfusions is associated with morbidity and mortality in lower-risk myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) patients. Many studies have suggested improved survival after iron chelation therapy (ICT), but valid data are ...

Bipolar Hydrogen Production by Hybrid Water Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This review focuses on the recent advances in uniqueness bipolar H2 production from the oxidation of representative small molecules, including 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural, formaldehyde, alcohols, and N‐heterocycle amides. The target electrocatalysts and the underlying mechanisms are discussed in respect to specific substrate oxidation.

Ironing out the details: Untangling dietary iron and genetic background in diabetes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The search for genetic risk factors in type-II diabetes has been hindered by a failure to consider dietary variables. Dietary nutrients impact metabolic disease risk and severity and are essential to maintaining metabolic health.

Iron overload and chelation

open access: yesHematology, 2005
Iron is one of the most common elements in nature. As a transition metal it is very efficient in electron transport and redox reactions. The proteins and enzymes in which iron is an essential component play a key role in respiration, energy production, detoxification of harmful oxygen species and cell replication.

Emergent Spin‐Glass Behavior in an Iron(II)‐Based Metal–Organic Framework Glass

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A one‐pot, solvent‐free synthesis yields an Fe2+‐based metal‐organic framework (MOF) glass featuring a continuous random network structure. The material exhibits spin‐glass freezing at 14 K, driven by topological‐disorder and short‐range magnetic frustration, showcasing the potential of MOF glasses as a plattform for cooperative magnetic phenomena in ...

The role of magnetic resonance imaging in the evaluation of transfusional iron overload in myelodysplastic syndromes

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Hematologia e Hemoterapia, 2015
Myelodysplastic syndromes represent a group of heterogeneous hematopoietic neoplasms derived from an abnormal multipotent progenitor cell, characterized by a hyperproliferative bone marrow, dysplasia of the cellular hemopoietic elements and ineffective ...

Iron Chelation in Local Infection

open access: yesMolecules, 2021
Iron is an essential element in multiple biochemical pathways in humans and pathogens. As part of the innate immune response in local infection, iron availability is restricted locally in order to reduce overproduction of reactive oxygen species by the ...

The Effect of Silymarin on Serum Concentration of Soluble Apoptosis Markers in β-Thalassemia Major Patients Receiving Desferrioxamine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Background: Despite appropriate chelation therapy with desferrioxamine, iron deposition in visceral organs causes tissue damage in thalassemia major patients.

MPI‐Guided Photothermal Therapy of Prostate Cancer Using Stem Cell Delivery of Magnetotheranostic Nanoflowers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Tumor‐tropic human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) were used as delivery vehicles for magnetotheranostic gold–iron oxide nanoflowers. Magnetic particle imaging of the iron component demonstrated widespread intratumoral distribution and sustained retention in contrast to injection of naked nanoflowers.

Italian Society of Hematology practice guidelines for the management of iron overload in thalassemia major and related disorders

open access: yesHaematologica, 2008
New measures of iron accumulation in liver and heart (superconducting quantum inference device and magnetic resonance imaging), and oral iron chelators (deferiprone and deferasirox) are available for managing iron overload in thalassemia major. To assure
