ISOTONICITY OF LIVER AND OF KIDNEY TISSUE IN SOLUTIONS OF ELECTROLYTES [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Experimental Medicine, 1959
Solutions of a wide variety of electrolytes, isotonic with liver or with kidney tissue, have approximately the same osmotic pressure as solutions of sodium chloride isotonic with tissues of the two organs respectively; that is, with solutions approximately twice as concentrated as the sodium chloride of mammalian blood plasma.

ANGPTL4 Exacerbates Renal Injury in Diabetic Kidney Disease by Impairing Podocyte Lipophagy via Compromised Lysosomal Degradative Function

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In diabetic kidney disease, elevated podocyte ANGPTL4 is linked to reduced TFEB nuclear localization and compromised lysosomal degradative function. These changes impair podocyte lipophagy and promote lipid‐droplet accumulation and podocyte injury, which may contribute to renal injury progression.

Tailored Covalent Organic Frameworks Enable the Encapsulation of Living Cells to Produce Rare Ginsenoside

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work reports the in situ fabrication of Escherichia coli@covalent organic frameworks (E. coli@COFs) in phosphate‐buffered saline. The COFs form an exoskeleton on E. coli, protecting intracellular β‐glucosidase (Ssbgl) while enhancing mass transfer.

Nasal Saline Irrigation for Sinonasal Disorders

open access: yesPhilippine Journal of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, 2007
Nasal saline irrigation is a simple easy-to-do procedure that has been used to treat sinus and nasal conditions for many years.  Wingrave in his 1902 paper “The Nature of Discharges & Douches” discussed cleansing of the nasal passages as an important ...

Fluorescent Hydrogel‐Based Strain Sensor With Machine Learning‐Augmented Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
Fluorescent hydrogel strain sensor based on carbon quantum dots enabling optical readout of deformation through strain‐dependent emission changes, coupled with Random Forest analysis to capture nonlinear fluorescence‐concentration relationships and identify optimal sensing conditions. Hydrogels are ideal matrices for bio‐integrated wearable sensors due

EXPERIMENTS TOWARD A PHYSIOLOGICALLY ISOTONIC SOLUTION OF SALTS. [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Medical Association, 1908
The solution that is almost always employed by surgeons and clinicians for irrigations and intravenous injections is the so-called normal saline solution. This is a solution of NaCl in water varying from 0.7-0.9 per cent. in strength and agreeing approximately with the tonicity of blood, that being the only property of blood which at the time that this

How does the Kids SIPsmartER program impact the sugar‐sweetened beverage intake of students: An investigation beyond total treatment effect in randomized controlled trial

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract This study develops and empirically estimates a structural framework to decompose the causal pathways of multilevel behavioral interventions targeting adolescent health behaviors. We apply this framework to the Kids SIPsmartER (KSS) program, a 6‐month, school‐based intervention evaluated through a clustered randomized controlled trial in rural

A mouse model of mechanical stress injury to the basal ganglia using thermosensitive PNIPAM hydrogel for intracerebral hemorrhage research

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
In this study, we established a novel mouse model of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) by stereotactically injecting thermosensitive PNIPAM hydrogel into the internal capsule to impose localized mechanical stress on the corticospinal tract, which provides a straightforward and reproducible tool for preclinical studies on focal mechanical stress–induced ...
