Isotype has been a purely historical phenomenon for about ten years. It proposed a system for presenting information in visual form; but how can designers now learn from this work ? It is argued that Isotype cannot be fully articulated as method, and that it should be understood rather as approach.

Isotype Determination of Antibodies
Current Protocols in Immunology, 1992AbstractOn identifying a new monoclonal antibody, or in characterizing antibodies in sera evoked by disease or immunization, it is particularly informative to determine the serological class of the antibodies. The serological class of the protein is determined by the structure of the antibody constant region.

Molecular Immunology, 1986
In 1974 Jerne proposed that the immune system functions as a network of interacting antibody combining sites (paratopes); each paratope reacts with determinants (idiotopes) borne by V regions of immunoglobulins (Ig)* and expresses idiotopes which are recognized by paratopes of other Ig (Jerne, 1974).

Regulation of isotype switching
Current Opinion in Immunology, 1992In the past year, our understanding of the mechanisms that regulate isotype switching has significantly progressed. Activation of germ line transcription by isotype-specific cytokines is emerging as a crucial mechanism for increasing the accessibility of a particular switch region, and targeting switch recombination.

Evolution of isotype switching
Seminars in Immunology, 2004This review discusses evolution of the process of Ig heavy chain class switching, relating it to the first appearance of somatic hypermutation (SHM) of variable region genes. First, we discuss recent findings on the mechanism of class switch recombination (CSR) in mice and humans, and then review the mechanisms of expression of Ig heavy chain isotypes ...

Immunoglobulin Isotype Expression
1978Many different kinds of observations suggest that during development of the B cell line, individual V H genes determining the antibody specificity of an immunoglobulin molecule can be expressed with multiple C H genes. Thus each clone of B cells, defined by expression of a variable-region gene for the light and heavy chains of the immunoglobulin ...

Within 6 hours after primary immunization the serum of mice contains a unique form of processed antigen which is complexed with immunoglobulin (Ig). These complexes are formed through the mediation of a T cell factor and markedly enhance in vivo the 7s antibody response.
