Jumbo phage-mediated transduction of genomic islands. [PDF]

open access: yesProc Natl Acad Sci U S A
Abstract Bacteria acquire new genes by horizontal gene transfer (HGT), typically mediated by mobile genetic elements (MGEs). While plasmids, bacteriophages and certain integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs) are well characterized, the broader diversity of MGEs remains poorly understood.

Genome Sequence of Jumbo Phage vB_AbaM_ME3 of Acinetobacter baumanni [PDF]

open access: yesGenome Announcements, 2016
ABSTRACT Bacteriophage (phage) vB_AbaM_ME3 was previously isolated from wastewater effluent using the propagating host Acinetobacter baumannii DSM 30007. The full genome was sequenced, revealing it to be the largest Acinetobacter bacteriophage sequenced to date with a size of 234 ...

A family of novel immune systems targets early infection of nucleus-forming jumbo phages

open access: yesbioRxiv, 2022
Jumbo bacteriophages of the ⌽KZ-like family are characterized by large genomes (>200 kb) and the remarkable ability to assemble a proteinaceous nucleus-like structure.

Complete Genome Sequence of Klebsiella pneumoniae Jumbo Phage Miami

open access: yesMicrobiology Resource Announcements, 2021
Bacteriophage Miami infects Klebsiella pneumoniae , a Gram-negative pathogen that is becoming an increasing threat to public health due to its multidrug resistance. Here, we describe the annotation of the 253,383-bp jumbo phage Miami genome sequence and its similarity to other myophages.

Isolation and Characterization of a Novel Jumbo Phage from Leaf Litter Compost and Its Suppressive Effect on Rice Seedling Rot Diseases

open access: yesViruses, 2021
Jumbo phages have DNA genomes larger than 200 kbp in large virions composed of an icosahedral head, tail, and other adsorption structures, and they are known to be abundant biological substances in nature.

Complete Genome Sequence of a Jumbo Bacteriophage, Escherichia Phage vB_EcoM_EC001

open access: yesMicrobiology Resource Announcements, 2022
Here, we report the genome sequence of a jumbo Escherichia phage vB_EcoM_EC001, a myovirus isolated from primary sludge using enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli O157:H7. The genome is 240,200 bp long and has 270 predicted coding sequences, including a tryptophanyl tRNA gene.

A Novel Jumbo Phage PhiMa05 Inhibits Harmful Microcystis sp. [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2021
Microcystis poses a concern because of its potential contribution to eutrophication and production of microcystins (MCs). Phage treatment has been proposed as a novel biocontrol method for Microcystis. Here, we isolated a lytic cyanophage named PhiMa05 with high efficiency against MCs-producing Microcystis strains.

Characterization and Genomic Analysis of a Novel Jumbo Bacteriophage vB_StaM_SA1 Infecting Staphylococcus aureus With Two Lysins

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2022
The development of new antimicrobial agents is critically needed due to the alarming increase in antibiotic resistance in bacterial pathogens. Phages have been widely considered as effective alternatives to antibiotics.

Global jumbo phage database (GJPD)

open access: yes, 2023
Jumbo phages (genome length > 200 kbp) have been found in diverse habitats worldwide, infecting a variety of prokaryotes. Yet, our understanding of their evolution and adaptation strategy in soil is limited due to the scarcity of soil-derived genomes ...

A phage nucleus-associated RNA-binding protein is required for jumbo phage infection

open access: yes, 2023
Large-genome bacteriophages (jumbo phages) of the Chimalliviridae family assemble a nucleus-like compartment bounded by a protein shell that protects the replicating phage genome from host-encoded restriction enzymes and CRISPR/Cas nucleases.
