Spectroscopic Characterisation of Disaccharides Derived from Keratan Sulfates

European Journal of Biochemistry, 1995
Skeletal keratan sulfates have been degraded by three independent techniques and the resultant, borohydride-reduced, disaccharides have been characterised by NMR spectroscopy. The 1H and 13C (where available) chemical shifts are reported for the following substances, where GalNAc-ol represents N-acetyl-galactosaminitol, GlcNAc-ol represents N-acetyl ...

Detection of keratan sulfate by immunological methods in commercial chondroitin sulfate preparations

Carbohydrate Polymers, 2014
Chondroitin sulfate (CS), a well known nutraceutical, and keratan sulfate (KS) are glycosaminoglycans involved in the structure of cartilage proteoglycan, aggrecan. Since CS is extracted from cartilage, there may be a possibility that purified CS is contaminated with small amount of KS.

Structure and biological functions of keratan sulfate proteoglycans

1994
The skeletal and corneal keratan sulfate proteoglycans show a different metabolic and structural heterogeneity. The domain structure of the carbohydrate chain has been shown to be different in various animal species. There are two major types of skeletal keratan sulfate proteoglycans with and without fucose.

Keratan Sulfate Gal-6-Sulfotransferase

2002
Keratan sulfate (KS) is composed of the repeating disaccharide unit of Galβ1-4GlcNAc (poly-N-acetyllactosamine) with sulfate groups at the 6-position of the Gal and GlcNAc residues. Most GlcNAc residues and half of the Gal residues of corneal KS are sulfated, suggesting that sulfation of the Gal residue occurs after sulfation of the GlcNAc residue and ...

Keratan Sulfate: Biosynthesis, Structures, and Biological Functions

2014
Keratan sulfate is a glycosaminoglycan that has been investigated in the cornea and skeletal tissues for decades. Endoglycosidases and monoclonal antibodies specific for keratan sulfate have been developed. These materials have facilitated the analysis of keratan sulfate biosynthesis and structures. Likewise, they have expedited study of the biological

Identification of keratan sulfate in liver affected by morquio syndrome

Clinica Chimica Acta, 1979
Glycosaminoglycan content, composition and molecular weight were determined in liver obtained from a patient with Morquio syndrome (Mucopolysaccharidosis IV). There was about a four-fold increase in glycosaminoglycan content (as hexosamine) of the affected liver as compared to the control liver.

Assay of keratan sulfate as anion-Exchanger bound hexose

Connective Tissue Research, 1991
An assay for keratan sulfate in papain digests of human intervertebral disc and other tissues has been developed. The digest is applied to the acetate form of a tertiary amine acrylic anion-exchange resin, the oligosaccharide hexose is removed by washing the resin with 0.2 M sodium acetate buffer pH 5.0, then the keratan sulfate is eluted ...

The linkage of teleost skin keratan sulfate to protein

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - General Subjects, 1984
Abstract The linkage of teleost skin keratan sulfate to protein was investigated. Afeter its exhaustive digestion with pronase, peptidokeratan sulfate was obtained with aspartic acid as the predominant amino acid. The N-terminal of the amino acid residues of the preparation was dansylated, and the carbohydrate-peptide linkage fragment was isolated ...

Identification of the glycosaminoglycan keratan sulfate in the prostatic secretory cell

The Prostate, 2000
Prostate secretory granules (PSG) represent the basic secretory unit of the prostate gland, containing many of its exocrine proteases. Recent analysis of intraluminal corpora amylacea, a proposed by-product of PSG secretion, detected sulfated glycosaminoglycans (GAG) possibly keratan sulfate (KS), indicating a secretory mechanism for GAG in the human ...

Functional Consequences of Keratan Sulfate Sulfation in Electrosensory Tissues and in Neuronal Regulation

Advanced Biosystems, 2019
AbstractKeratan sulfate (KS) is a functional electrosensory and neuro‐instructive molecule. Recent studies have identified novel low sulfation KS in auditory and sensory tissues such as the tectorial membrane of the organ of Corti and the Ampullae of Lorenzini in elasmobranch fish.
