l-Carnitine and Acetyl-l-carnitine Roles and Neuroprotection in Developing Brain [PDF]

open access: yesNeurochemical Research, 2017
L-Carnitine functions to transport long chain fatty acyl-CoAs into the mitochondria for degradation by β-oxidation. Treatment with L-carnitine can ameliorate metabolic imbalances in many inborn errors of metabolism. In recent years there has been considerable interest in the therapeutic potential of L-carnitine and its acetylated derivative acetyl-L ...

Oxidative effect of l-carnitine on energy metabolism in diploid and triploid rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss): impact on metabolites

open access: yesInternational Aquatic Research, 2018
l-Carnitine plays a key role in the regulation of energy metabolism and growth in fish. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of dietary l-carnitine levels on carnitine homeostasis and energy metabolism in diploid and triploid trout ...

Integrated Metabolomic and Transcriptomic Analysis of Acute Kidney Injury Caused by Leptospira Infection

open access: yesPathogens, 2022
Renal leptospirosis caused by leptospiral infection is characterised by tubulointerstitial nephritis and tubular dysfunction, resulting in acute and chronic kidney injury.

l-carnitine in critically ill patients—a case series study

open access: yesRenal Replacement Therapy, 2018
Background l-carnitine is essential for lipid metabolism, and lack of l-carnitine intake and loss by treatments lead to carnitine depletion causing muscle weakness, anemia, and immune dysfunction.

Scientific Opinion on the safety and efficacy of L‐carnitine and L‐carnitine L‐tartrate as feed additives for all animal species based on a dossier submitted by Lonza Benelux BV

open access: yesEFSA Journal, 2012
L‐Carnitine has a key role in the metabolism of fatty acids as a ‘substrate’ for the reversible acetylation of coenzyme A and as a carrier for the transport of long‐chain fatty acids from cytosol across the inner mitochondrial membrane. L‐Carnitine and L‐

L-CARNITINE SUPPLEMENTATION FOR AGE-INDUCED REPRODUCTIVE CRITERIA IN MALE PIGEONS [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Animal and Poultry Production, 2007
The objective of this study is showing the effect of bird’s age on semen quality, semen collection, seminal plasma characteristics and testicular histology on pigeon males, and the potential effect of L-carnitine supplementation on these traits.

Essential lipid autacoids rewire mitochondrial energy efficiency in metabolic dysfunction‐associated fatty liver disease

open access: yesHepatology, EarlyView., 2022
Increased liver content of DHA‐derived small lipid autacoids (i.e resolvin D1 and maresin 1) associates with enhanced mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation, fatty acid β‐oxidation and bioenergetic metabolic flux. These features provide hepatic protection from steatotic, pro‐inflammatory and fibrogenic insults.

L-Carnitine and Acetyl-L-Carnitine: Potential Novel Biomarkers for Major Depressive Disorder [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychiatry, 2020
The lack of biomarkers greatly limits the diagnosis and treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD). Endogenous L-carnitine (LC) and its derivative acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) play antidepressant roles by improving brain energy metabolism, regulating neurotransmitters and neural plasticity.

Acetyl-l-carnitine for dementia [PDF]

open access: yesCochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, 2003
Dementia is a common mental health problem affecting 5% of those over 65. Various pathological processes are linked to memory impairment in dementia, particularly those affecting the cholinergic neurotransmitter system. Acetyl-l-carnitine (ALC) is derived from carnitine and is described as having several properties which may be beneficial in dementia ...
