Lactose intolerance: changing paradigms due to molecular biology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Na maioria dos mamíferos a atividade da enzima lactase diminui na parede intestinal após o desmame, caracterizando a hipolactasia primária que provoca sintomas de intolerância à lactose. A intensidade dos sintomas de distensão, flatulência, dor abdominal

Lactose tolerance tests in adults with normal lactase activity

open access: yesGastroenterology, 1966
Summary Thirty-six oral lactose tolerance tests were done in 18 healthy persons who had normal jejunal lactase activity at the ligament of Treitz. Each subject received both a 50- and a 100-g dose of lactose in solutions of different tonicity. An absorptive defect was ruled out in each subject. A rise in blood sugar of less than 20 mg per 100 ml (flat

Beyond Gut Modulation: A Critical Review of the Therapeutic Potential, Safety, and Clinical Prospects of Natural Polysaccharides for IBD

open access: yesFood Safety and Health, EarlyView.
In this review, we critically summarized the application of natural polysaccharides (NPs) for the treatment of IBD. This approach combines, in a unique way (right), the basic structure–activity relationships of NPs from different origins (left) with their multipronged mode of action, which involves modulation of the gut microbiota and other ...

Fermentation of an aqueous ice cream by-product by lactose-utilizing yeast species

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science
: This study evaluated the fermentative performance of several yeast strains on the aqueous by-product of waste ice cream (WIC) to ethanol, comparing 3 reported lactose-utilizers, Kluyveromyces marxianus Y-329, Dekkera anomala Y-1414, and Kluyveromyces ...

Lung Cancer Patients Display Increased Expression of Bovine Meat and Milk Factor (BMMF) Proteins in Peritumor Alveolar Macrophages

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cancer, EarlyView.
Plasmid‐like DNA sequences frequently found in bovine milk and serum have been proposed as infectious agents promoting indirect carcinogenesis. This multi‐omics study detected immune cells positive for these bovine meat and milk factors (BMMFs) in patients with lung cancer, with BMMF expression inversely correlated with smoking intensity.
