A virologist’s guide to hide and seek : evasion of innate immunity by primate lentiviruses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
HIV is the cause of a chronic, incurable infection in 37 million people worldwide in 2014. This thesis investigates how the immune system detects HIV and how in turn HIV avoids detection by the immune system.

Globotriaosylceramide Gb3 Influences Wound Healing and Scar Formation by Orchestrating Fibroblast Heterogeneity

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 41, November 6, 2025.
In superficial second‐degree burn wounds, Gb3 turns on genes related to papillary cells through the FGF2 signaling pathway. This increases the ability of cells to break down fibrin and decreases fibrosis, which ultimately prevents scar formation in burn injuries.

Glucosylceramide synthase inhibitors differentially affect expression of glycosphingolipids [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Glucosylceramide synthase (GCS) catalyzes the first committed step in the biosynthesis of glucosylceramide (GlcCer)-related glycosphingolipids (GSLs). Although inhibitors of GCS, PPMP and PDMP have been widely used to elucidate their biological function ...

Time and cell-dependent effects of endocytosis inhibitors on the internalization of biomolecule markers and nanomaterials [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Endocytosis is an essential function of cells, with key roles in the internalisation of nutrients, signal molecules and also drugs. Endocytic processes are therefore widely investigated in the context of drug delivery, and inhibitors of endocytic ...

Bulk Segregant Analysis Reveals Genomic Regions Associated With Imidacloprid Resistance in the Colorado Potato Beetle

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 11, November 2025.
Genomic regions potentially associated with resistance against imidacloprid in the Colorado potato beetle were identified here using bulked segregant analysis. Candidate genes were then narrowed down using the functional annotation and expression analysis.

Cholesteryl hemiesters alter lysosome structure and function and induce proinflammatory cytokine production in macrophages [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Rationale: Cholesteryl hemiesters are oxidation products of polyunsaturated fatty acid esters of cholesterol. Their oxo-ester precursors have been identified as important components of the "core aldehydes" of human atheromata and in oxidized lipoproteins

Systematic Targeting of GD2‐Positive Neuroblastoma Tumors With a Photooncolytic Phage Nanovector Platform

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 38, October 13, 2025.
A tumor‐penetrating photooncolytic phage is developed for selectively targeting and delivering photosensitizers to GD2‐positive Neuroblastoma cells. Upon light activation, it precisely induces oncolysis of GD2‐positive cells with no effect on GD2‐negative ones.

Fundamental Neurochemistry Review: Sphingolipids and Ceramides in Brain Development

open access: yesJournal of Neurochemistry, Volume 169, Issue 10, October 2025.
Ceramides and sphingolipids in brain development and cell compartments. Ceramides and sphingolipids are known to influence multiple steps of brain development, including the formation of the neural tube, neural stem cell polarity and proliferation at the ventricular boundary, neuronal migration—for example, whilst migrating on radial glial processes ...

Underlying dyslipidemia postpartum in women with a recent GDM pregnancy who develop type 2 diabetes

open access: yeseLife, 2020
Approximately, 35% of women with Gestational Diabetes (GDM) progress to Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) within 10 years. However, links between GDM and T2D are not well understood. We used a well-characterised GDM prospective cohort of 1035 women following up to 8

Fostering collaborative research for rare genetic disease: The example of Niemann-Pick type C disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Rare disease represents one of the most significant issues facing the medical community and health care providers worldwide, yet the majority of these disorders never emerge from their obscurity, drawing little attention from the medical community or the
