Interactivity of language

Language and Linguistics Compass, 2018
Abstract In previous decades, the language sciences made important advances by dividing language into its different information formats, such as phonetics, semantics, and syntax. Such division generally implied that language processing is divorced from context.

Interactive languages

Proceedings of the December 9-11, 1968, fall joint computer conference, part I on - AFIPS '68 (Fall, part I), 1968
Algebraic languages currently available on time sharing systems can be divided into two categories: batchoriented languages and conversational languages. The batch languages (ALGOL, FORTRAN, PL/1:, though quite powerful in their ability to express complicated algorithms, are in many ways unsuited to an interactive environment.

On evaluating interactive query languages

Information Sciences, 1983
Abstract In this paper, we propose some user interaction criteria for describing and evaluating interactive query languages. We divide the querying process into three parts: request, reply, and dynamics. For all three parts, certain desirable characteristics are identified that describe the parameters of the user interaction.

Interactive machine language programming

Proceedings of the November 30--December 1, 1965, fall joint computer conference, part I on XX - AFIPS '65 (Fall, part I), 1965
The problems of machine language programming, in the broad sense of coding in which it is possible to write each instruction out explicitly, have been curiously neglected in the literature. Granted that less than half of the binary instructions generated in the past year had their origin in assembly language, it remains likely that much more than half ...

Designing speech and language interactions

CHI '14 Extended Abstracts on Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2014
Speech and natural language remain our most natural forms of interaction; yet the HCI community have been very timid about focusing their attention on designing and developing spoken language interaction techniques. While significant efforts are spent and progress made in speech recognition, synthesis, and natural language processing, there is now ...

The natural language of interactive systems

Communications of the ACM, 1980
The work reported here stems from our deep belief that improved human engineering can add significantly to the acceptance and use of computer technology. In particular, this report describes an experiment to test the hypothesis that certain features of natural language provide a useful guide for
