The phase noise of two low noise, high quality factor actively modelocked lasers is investigated. It is found that increasing the quality factor of a laser can increase the phase noise relative to the RF source used to modelock the laser, even though the absolute noise of the laser is decreased.

Phase noise of diode laser in self-mixing interference
We investigate the phase noise of a diode laser based on the interferometric self-mixing effect. A detuned Fabry-Perot cavity converts the phase noise into intensity noise, and the noise is measured by the novel method as a function of the amount of feedback and the distance between the target and the laser front facet. Experimental results can be well

Dynamics of Semiconductor Laser Coupled with Two External Cavities
An investigation into the dynamic states and relative intensity noise of laser diodes subjected to double optical feedback has been conducted. We employed modified and improved time-delay rate equations to account for double external optical feedback ...

Optomechanical entanglement in the presence of laser phase noise [PDF]
We study the simplest optomechanical system in the presence of laser phase noise using the covariance matrix formalism. We show that the destructive effect of the phase noise is especially strong in the bistable regime. This explains why ground state cooling is still possible in the presence of phase noise, as it happens far away from the bistable ...

Narrow-linewidth lasers have a high spectral purity, long coherent length, and low phase noise, so they have important applications in atomic clocks, precision measurement, and quantum computing. We inject a transmitted laser from a narrow-linewidth (∼15

Electronic laser phase noise reduction [PDF]
The first integrated wideband laser phase noise reduction scheme is presented where the laser phase noise is first detected using a photonic chip, processed using an electronic chip, and subtracted from the laser phase in a feed-forward manner. The proof-of-concept experiments on a commercially available 1553nm distributed feedback laser show linewidth

Suppressing laser phase noise in an optomechanical system [PDF]
We propose a scheme to suppress the laser phase noise without increasing the optomechanical single-photon coupling strength. In the scheme, the parametric amplification terms, created by Kerr and Duffing nonlinearities, can restrain laser phase noise and strengthen the effective optomechanical coupling, respectively.

Simple Noise Mitigation Scheme for Coherent Optical DMT Signal Transmission System
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a noise mitigation scheme for coherent optical discrete multitone (DMT) signal transmission system. The proposed scheme can mitigate the laser phase noise and additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) simultaneously ...

Unveiling the dynamics of optical frequency combs from phase-amplitude correlations
The noise dynamics of an optical frequency comb based on a mode-locked Ti-sapphire laser is analyzed in terms of noise modes. A spectrally resolved multipixel homodyne detection enables the simultaneous measurement of the amplitude and phase noises of ...
