Virus Latency and the Impact on Plants

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2019
Plant viruses are thought to be essentially harmful to the lives of their cultivated crop hosts. In most cases studied, the interaction between viruses and cultivated crop plants negatively affects host morphology and physiology, thereby resulting in ...

Adult‐Onset Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis Presenting With Subacute Cognitive Deficits

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We describe the case of a 41‐year‐old man diagnosed with adult‐onset subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE). The patient presented with subacute progressive cognitive deficits and a neuropsychological profile indicating predominant frontoparietal dysfunction. MRI showed only mild parietal‐predominant cerebral atrophy.

Redefining KSHV Latency [PDF]

open access: yesCell Host & Microbe, 2013
In this issue of Cell Host & Microbe, Chang and Ganem (2013) report that Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus infection of lymphatic endothelial cells (LECs), but not blood endothelial cells (BECs), activates mTORC1 signaling and sensitizes LECs to rapamycin-induced killing.

Approximate Pure Nash Equilibria in Weighted Congestion Games: Existence, Efficient Computation, and Structure

open access: yes, 2011
We consider structural and algorithmic questions related to the Nash dynamics of weighted congestion games. In weighted congestion games with linear latency functions, the existence of (pure Nash) equilibria is guaranteed by potential function arguments.

Clustering Algorithm Reveals Dopamine‐Motor Mismatch in Cognitively Preserved Parkinson's Disease

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To explore the relationship between dopaminergic denervation and motor impairment in two de novo Parkinson's disease (PD) cohorts. Methods n = 249 PD patients from Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) and n = 84 from an external clinical cohort.

Targeting Ikaros and Aiolos with pomalidomide fails to reactivate or induce apoptosis of the latent HIV reservoir

open access: yesJournal of Virology
HIV persists in people living with HIV (PLHIV) on antiretroviral therapy (ART) in long-lived and proliferating latently infected CD4+ T cells that selectively express pro-survival proteins, including the zinc finger proteins, Ikaros and Aiolos.

Lessons Learned from In Vivo Studies of a Viral Noncoding RNA

open access: yesmSphere, 2016
Despite increasing interest in the biology of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), few functions have been uncovered for viral ncRNAs in vivo. In their recent article in mSphere, Feldman and colleagues [E. R. Feldman et al., mSphere 1(2):e00105-15, 2016, doi:10.1128/

Measuring the Success of HIV-1 Cure Strategies

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2020
HIV-1 eradication strategies aim to achieve viral remission in the absence of antiretroviral therapy (ART). The development of an HIV-1 cure remains challenging due to the latent reservoir (LR): long-lived CD4 T cells that harbor transcriptionally silent

Causal Consistency and Latency Optimality: Friend or Foe?

open access: yes, 2018
Causal consistency is an attractive consistency model for replicated data stores. It is provably the strongest model that tolerates partitions, it avoids the long latencies associated with strong consistency, and, especially when using read-only ...

Development of a Personalized Visualization and Analysis Tool to Improve Clinical Care in Complex Multisystem Diseases With Application to Scleroderma

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective In complex diseases, it is challenging to assess a patient's disease state, trajectory, treatment exposures, and risk of multiple outcomes simultaneously, efficiently, and at the point of care. Methods We developed an interactive patient‐level data visualization and analysis tool (VAT) that automates illustration of the trajectory of a ...
