The Smoking Paradox in Stroke Patients Under Reperfusion Treatment Is Associated With Endothelial Dysfunction

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2022
ObjectiveThis study aimed to explore the association between smoking habit and the serum levels of soluble tumor necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis (sTWEAK), in relation with the functional outcome of patients with acute ischemic stroke ...

Amyloid‐related imaging abnormalities (ARIA) in anti‐amyloid therapies for Alzheimer's disease: An update from the Alzheimer's Association ARIA workgroup

open access: yesAlzheimer's &Dementia, Volume 22, Issue 4, April 2026.
Abstract In 2011, a workgroup of the Alzheimer's Association Research Roundtable introduced recommendations for detecting and monitoring amyloid‐related imaging abnormalities (ARIA) in Alzheimer's disease (AD) clinical trials. Since then, anti‐amyloid immunotherapies have received regulatory approval for AD treatment and are beginning to enter clinical

A Rare Case Report of Neuroimaging, Electrophysiological, and Dynamic Laryngoscopy Studies in a Stroke Patient of Foix‐Chavany‐Marie Syndrome

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 4, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Foix‐Chavany‐Marie Syndrome (FCMS), also known as opercular syndrome, is a rare neurological disorder caused by an ischemic stroke that results in autonomic‐voluntary dissociation. In this case report, we describe a patient who presented with an acute right frontal and parietal cortical lesion, in addition to a remote infarction in the left ...

Pilot Investigation: Older Adults With Atrial Fibrillation Demonstrate Greater Brain Leukoaraiosis in Infracortical and Deep Regions Relative to Non-Atrial Fibrillation Peers

open access: yesFrontiers in Aging Neuroscience, 2020
BackgroundThis pilot study explored differences in distribution of white matter hyperintensities (called leukoaraiosis; LA) in older adults (mean age = 67 years) with atrial fibrillation (AF) vs.

Druggable genome‐wide Mendelian randomization analysis identifies potential treatment targets in vascular dementia

open access: yesAlzheimer's &Dementia: Translational Research &Clinical Interventions, Volume 12, Issue 2, April/June 2026.
Abstract BACKGROUND There are currently no US Food and Drug Administration‐approved treatments for vascular dementia (VaD). Genome‐wide approaches have successfully identified druggable targets and treatments for various disorders. In this study, we performed druggable genome‐wide two‐sample Mendelian randomization (2SMR) analysis to identify possible ...

Complexity in the genetic architecture of leukoaraiosis in hypertensive sibships from the GENOA Study

open access: yesBMC Medical Genomics, 2009
Background Subcortical white matter hyperintensity on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain, referred to as leukoaraiosis, is associated with increased risk of stroke and dementia.

Leukoaraiosis Is a Chronic Atherosclerotic Disease [PDF]

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal, 2012
Background and Purpose.White matter changes (WMCs), or leukoaraiosis (LA), are associated with increased age, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and history of stroke. Although several lines of evidence suggest a role of atherosclerosis in atherothrombotic vascular events, their involvement in LA remains to be determined.

Antipsychotics and Their Association With Long‐Term Outcomes in Young Ischemic Stroke Patients

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neurology, Volume 33, Issue 4, April 2026.
Among 966 young ischemic stroke patients, approximately 6% had prior antipsychotic use and a similar proportion initiated treatment after stroke. Pre‐stroke antipsychotic users had more adverse socioeconomic and clinical risk profiles, including substance use and more severe stroke presentation.
