Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Controlling entrainment in the smoke cloud using level set-based front tracking

open access: yesMeteorologische Zeitschrift, 2015
Although large-eddy simulation (LES) has been shown to produce a reasonable representation of the turbulent circulations within the stratocumulus-topped boundary layer, it has difficulties to accurately predict cloud-top entrainment rates. In this paper,

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Comment on the level-set method used in ‘Numerical study on mobilization of oil slugs in capillary model with level set approach’

open access: yesEngineering Applications of Computational Fluid Mechanics, 2016
This is a comment on a 2014 paper by Dai and Wang. It is argued that the validation in Dai and Wang's paper is an artifact caused by the boundary conditions of the level-set function, meaning that the effects reported in their paper have little physical ...

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

Diversity and complexity in neural organoids

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neural organoid research aims to expand genetic diversity on one side and increase tissue complexity on the other. Chimeroids integrate multiple donor genomes within single organoids. Self‐organising multi‐identity organoids, exogenous cell seeding, or enforced assembly of region‐specific organoids contribute to tissue complexity.

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Eikonal Boundary Condition for Level Set Method

open access: yes
In this paper, we propose to use the eikonal equation as a boundary condition when advective or normal flow equations in the level set formulation are solved numerically on polyhedral meshes in the three-dimensional domain. Since the level set method can use a signed distance function as an initial condition, the eikonal equation on the boundary is a ...

A hybrid level-set method in two and three dimensions for modeling detonation and combustion problems in complex geometries

open access: yes, 2004
We present an accurate and fast wave tracking method that uses parametric representations of tracked fronts, combined with modifications of level-set methods that use narrow bands.
