Long-term suppression of Leydig cell steroidogenesis prevents Leydig cell aging [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 1999
Male aging is accompanied by reduced testosterone production by the Leydig cells, the testosterone-producing cells of the testis. The mechanism by which this occurs is unknown. Based on the observations that reactive oxygen is capable of damaging components of the steroidogenic pathway and that reactive oxygen is produced during steroidogenesis itself,

Determining the timeline of gonadal and genital differentiation in male and female equine fetuses allows for early detection and intervention in malformations

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Sexual differentiation in the equine fetus involves coordinated morphogenetic processes that shape both the gonads and the genital ducts. Although the formation of testes and ovaries has been relatively well documented, the temporal dynamics and morphometric patterns of the mesonephric (Wolffian) and paramesonephric (Müllerian) ducts remain ...

Steroidogenesis in Leydig Cells: Effects of Aging and Environmental Factors

open access: yesReproduction, 2017
Serum testosterone (T) levels decrease with aging in both humans and rodents. Using the rat as a model system, it was found that age-related reductions in serum T were not due to loss of Leydig cells, but rather to the reduced ability of the Leydig cells

Leydig cell hyperplasia and Leydig cell tumour in postmenopausal women: report of two cases

open access: yesGynecological Endocrinology, 2012
Leydig cell hyperplasia and Leydig cell tumours of the ovary are rare. We present two cases in which patients had increased blood levels of testosterone and frank hirsutism. Imaging showed minimal abnormalities. After adrenal disease had been ruled out, they underwent a bilateral oophorectomy.

Developmental morphology of claspers and clasper‐glands during maturation in Potamotrygon wallacei (Chondrichthyes: Potamotrygoninae)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The claspers are the copulatory organs in male elasmobranchs, responsible for directing the semen into the female cloaca (C). However, the microscopic morphology of the claspers remains poorly understood. This study describes the morphology of the claspers and clasper glands (CGs) of cururu stingray (Potamotrygon wallacei) at different ...

A Short-Term Exposure to Tributyltin Blocks Leydig Cell Regeneration in the Adult Rat Testis

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2017
Background: Tributyltin (TBT) is widely used as an antifouling agent that may cause reproductive toxicity. The mechanism of TBT on Leydig cell development is still unknown. The objective of the present study was to investigate whether a brief exposure to

Gigantol Improves Cholesterol Metabolism and Progesterone Biosynthesis in MA-10 Leydig Cells

open access: yesCurrent Issues in Molecular Biology, 2021
In aging males, androgen production by testicular Leydig cells decreases at a rate of approximately 1% per year. Phenolic compounds may enhance testosterone biosynthesis and delay the onset of male hypogonadism.

Morphophysiological dynamics of the proximal post‐testicular ducts in Crotalus durissus Linnaeus, 1758 (Squamata: Viperidae)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The organization and function of reptilian excurrent ducts remain poorly characterized, particularly in Neotropical snakes. We provide the first integrative morphological, histochemical, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural analysis of the proximal post‐testicular ducts of Crotalus durissus across reproductive stages.

Transforming growth factor-β1 signaling represses testicular steroidogenesis through cross-talk with orphan nuclear receptor Nur77. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Transforming growth factor- β1 (TGF-β1) has been reported to inhibit luteinizing hormone (LH) mediated-steroidogenesis in testicular Leydig cells. However, the mechanism by which TGF-β1 controls the steroidogenesis in Leydig cells is not well understood.

TRPV1 activation induces cell death of TM3 mouse Leydig cells

open access: yesJournal of Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology, 2021
The role of transient receptor potential vanilloid receptor-1 (TRPV1) has been primarily investigated in pain sensory neurons. Relatively, little research has been performed in testicular cells.
