Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Life cycle analysis of road construction and use [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Both the construction and use of roads have a range of environmental impacts; therefore, it is important to assess the sources of their burdens to adopt correct mitigation policies.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Malfunctions of Medical Devices Due to Electrostatic Occurrences Big Data Analysis of 10 Years of the FDA’s Reports

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2018
An electrostatic discharge (ESD) event can cause a medical device to fail and pose a threat to patients'safety. This paper presents the data mining analysis of ESD failures in medical devices, over the last ten years, using the U.S.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Thesis on Firm Life Cycle, Product Life Cycle, and Retail Life Cycle

open access: yesManagement (Split), 1997
In this paper, the conceptions on firm life cycle, product life cycle and retail life cycle (institution and shop) have been analyzed. Conceptions based on biology have been compared as well. In retail forms specific qualities of particular approaches are described, connected with the efforts of a firm on that development, using price and other ...

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Analyzing labour supply of elderly people: a life-cycle approach [PDF]

open access: yes
In light of the ageing of the Dutch society, policy measures aim at increasing the participation rate of elderly workers, particularly in the age-group between 55 and 64. This paper develops a stylized numerical simulation model.
