Two Possible Scenarios for the Formation of Category 1 Bipolar Lightning Flashes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
We present and discuss the current and electric field waveforms associated with two upward bipolar lightning flashes that occurred at the Säntis Tower.

The initiation of lightning in thunderclouds: The possible influence of metastable nitrogen and oxygen molecules in initiating lightning streamers [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, 2015
AbstractAn examination is made of the possible role of metastable molecules of oxygen and nitrogen to contribute to the difference between the observed breakdown field in air of ~25 kV/cm and the electric fields observed in thunderclouds which generally have a maximum of ~3 kV/cm, which suggest much lower breakdown fields.

Translating Blue Light Stimulation From Batch to Perfusion: Process and Intracellular Metabolic Analysis

open access: yesBiotechnology and Bioengineering, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Improving cell‐specific productivity remains a central objective in biopharmaceutical manufacturing. In this study, the effect of blue light illumination on IgG1‐producing CHO DP‐12 cells was systematically evaluated across batch, fed‐batch, and perfusion cultivations in controlled 3 L bioreactor systems.

Metal nanostructure‐coupled label‐free localized surface plasmon resonance biosensors for rapid and sensitive disease diagnosis

open access: yesBMEMat, EarlyView.
LSPR biosensing enables rapid, sensitive, and low‐sample‐volume detection of biomarkers, with broad applications in diagnosing cancer, infectious, and chronic diseases. Advances in nanostructure design, micro/nanofabrication, and microfluidic integration have expanded the potential of LSPR sensors in biomedical diagnostics.

The Rich Chemistry of Ionized Methanol With Sulfur Dioxide: Pathways to Prebiotic and Elusive Species in Earth's Atmosphere and Space

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
The reaction between the methanol radical cation and sulfur dioxide is remarkably fast and forms several ionic and neutral products (HOSOH+, CH2OSO+, CH2OH+, CH2O, H2O, HSO2). The chemistry goes beyond simple proton or hydrogen transfer, revealing a close interaction between the two species, relevant to atmospheric and astrochemical environments where ...

Visualizing Specific Tubulin Isotypes and Pathogenic Variants in Cellular Microtubule Arrays

open access: yesCytoskeleton, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Eukaryotic cells depend on dynamic microtubule arrays to execute a wide range of functions vital for life. These microtubule filaments are formed through the polymerization of α/β‐tubulin proteins, which can be generated from numerous tubulin genes, or isotypes.

Regeneration failure, fire, topography, and climate interact to drive temperate wet forest landscapes into fire traps

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Where early successional forests are more flammable than old‐growth forests, forested landscapes are vulnerable to shifting into ‘fire traps' through positive feedbacks, where fire leads to more fire. These feedbacks are amplified by increased flammability driven by climate change, the presence of non‐native flammable plant species, and slowed ...

The start of lightning: evidence of bidirectional lightning initiation [PDF]

open access: yes
Lightning flashes are known to initiate in regions of strong electric fields inside thunderstorms, between layers of positively and negatively charged precipitation particles.

New era of lightning detection from space: application to electric power systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Information about lightning activity and its parameters is necessary to design and evaluate the lightning protection of an electrical power system. This information can be obtained from ground-based lightning detection networks that provide information ...
