Latin America: Terrorism Issues [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
[Excerpt] For most countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, threats emanating from terrorism are low. Terrorism in the region is largely perpetrated by groups in Colombia and by the remnants of radical leftist Andean groups.

Substrate specificity of Burkholderia pseudomallei multidrug transporters is influenced by the hydrophilic patch in the substrate‐binding pocket

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Multidrug transporters BpeB and BpeF from the Gram‐negative pathogen Burkholderia pseudomallei have a hydrophilic patch in their substrate‐binding pocket. Drug susceptibility tests and growth curve analyses using an Escherichia coli recombinant expression system revealed that the hydrophilic patches of BpeB and BpeF are involved in the substrate ...

DASL: An Index for Enhancing Tail Latency, Microarchitecture Friendliness, and Restructuring Overhead

open access: yesIEEE Access
The skip list is a popular in-memory index in modern database systems. It maintains multiple levels of lists, which makes it efficient in traversing sorted data. In addition, it is flexible in inserting and deleting data, while avoiding the restructuring

The path to microRNA therapeutics in psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2012
The microRNA (miRNA) class of noncoding RNAs exhibit a diverse range of regulatory roles in neuronal functions that are conserved from lower vertebrates to primates.

Methodology of the biological risk classification of animal pathogens in Belgium [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The biological hazards posed by micro-organisms have lead to their categorisation into risk groups and the elaboration of classification lists. Current classification systems rely on criteria defined by the World Health Organization, which cover the ...

Function‐driven design of a surrogate interleukin‐2 receptor ligand

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Interleukin (IL)‐2 signaling can be achieved and precisely fine‐tuned through the affinity, distance, and orientation of the heterodimeric receptors with their ligands. We designed a biased IL‐2 surrogate ligand that selectively promotes effector T and natural killer cell activation and differentiation. Interleukin (IL) receptors play a pivotal role in

An upstream open reading frame regulates expression of the mitochondrial protein Slm35 and mitophagy flux

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals how the mitochondrial protein Slm35 is regulated in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The authors identify stress‐responsive DNA elements and two upstream open reading frames (uORFs) in the 5′ untranslated region of SLM35. One uORF restricts translation, and its mutation increases Slm35 protein levels and mitophagy.

Improved O(N) neighbor list method using domain decomposition and data sorting [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
The conventional Verlet table neighbor list algorithm is improved to reduce the number of unnecessary inter-atomic distance calculations in molecular simulations involving large amount of atoms.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.
