Lipid-laden macrophages in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid as a marker for pulmonary aspiration
Pediatric Pulmonology, 1999An increased lipid content in alveolar macrophages of bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid is thought to be a useful indicator for recurrent pulmonary aspiration. To assess whether pulmonary diseases unrelated to aspiration can raise the lipid content in alveolar macrophages, we evaluated Oil-Red-O-stained smears of BAL fluid in 18 children aged 3-15 ...

The value of the lipid-laden macrophage index in the assessment of aspiration pneumonia
Australian and New Zealand Journal of Medicine, 1997Abstract Background: A semi‐quantitative index of lipid‐laden macrophages on broncho‐alveolar lavage (BAL) has been reported to be highly sensitive but only moderately specific for aspiration in adults. There has been little published literature evaluating this technique since the original report.

Association of lipid-laden alveolar macrophages and gastroesophageal reflux in children
Journal of Pediatrics, 1987The association of lipid-laden alveolar macrophages (LLAM) and gastroesophageal reflux (GER) was investigated prospectively in 115 patients in two groups. Group 1 included 74 children with chronic respiratory tract disorders and documented GER by prolonged esophageal pH monitoring, barium esophagram, and esophagoscopy; group 2 included 41 children with

Lipid-laden alveolar macrophages (LLAM): A useful marker of silent aspiration in children
Pediatric Pulmonology, 1999At present there is no test available which identifies children suffering from silent aspiration due to gastroesophageal reflux (GER). The purpose of this study was to determine whether lipid-laden alveolar macrophage (LLAM) scoring is a useful method to arrive at the diagnosis.

Lipid‐laden macrophage index in healthy canines
European Journal of Clinical Investigation, 2006AbstractBackground The quantity of lipids in alveolar macrophages is used clinically as an indicator of aspiration, which is associated with increased lung inflammation. This is determined in the macrophages obtained from bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) and is expressed as lipid‐laden macrophage index (LLMI).

Recurrent aspiration in children: Lipid‐laden alveolar macrophage quantitation
Pediatric Pulmonology, 1987AbstractWe prospectively evaluated bronchial washings from 45 patients aged 1 month to 25 years (mean 3.3 years) for the presence of lipid‐laden macrophages. By grading the amount of intracellular oil‐red‐O‐positive material, we determined a semiquantitative lipid‐laden macrophage index for each patient. All patients observed to be definite aspirators (

Magnolol stimulates lipolysis in lipid‐laden RAW 264.7 macrophages
Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, 2004AbstractThis study investigated the effect of magnolol, a compound isolated from Magnolia officinalis, on lipolysis in lipid‐laden RAW 264.7 macrophages. Treatment of macrophages with magnolol led to dissolution of lipid droplets. This phenomenon was accompanied by a dose‐dependent release of glycerol and cholesterol and a concomitant reduction in ...

Chronic aspiration in children: Evaluation of the lipid-laden macrophage index
Pediatric Pulmonology, 1999Chronic pulmonary aspiration (CPA) causes significant morbidity, but is underdiagnosed because of difficulties in establishing a diagnosis. The lipid-laden macrophage index (LLMI) is said to differentiate between those with and without CPA. Records of 113 patients were reviewed to determine specificity and sensitivity of the LLMI for CPA.
