Oxidative stress and the fetotoxicity of alcohol consumption during pregnancy. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
Pregnant Quackenbush Special mice were exposed to ethanol under semiacute (3.0 g/kg body weight intragastrically, days 7 to 12 of pregnancy), and chronic conditions (15% ethanol in drinking water for 5 weeks before and during pregnancy) to assess whether

Light Activated Induction of Cuproptosis in Resistant Cancer Cells Using Polymeric BODIPY Nanoparticles for Photoactivated Chemotherapy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents a photo‐responsive nanoparticle platform that precisely triggers copper‐dependent cuproptotic cell death in (drug‐resistant) cancer cells. The system remains stable and inactive in the dark but releases cytotoxic species upon red‐light irradiation, achieving potent activity in drug‐resistant breast cancer cells.

Salivary Parameters as Predictive Markers for Radiation-induced Treatment Response in Head and Neck Cancers: An Investigational Study

open access: yesMiddle East Journal of Cancer, 2018
Background: This study evaluates the predictive significance of salivary amylase, glutathione, lipid peroxides, and lactate dehydrogenase in the treatment of head and neck cancer patients who undergo curative radiotherapy/chemoradiotherapy.

Human macrophages limit oxidation products in low density lipoprotein

open access: yesLipids in Health and Disease, 2005
This study tested the hypothesis that human macrophages have the ability to modify oxidation products in LDL and oxidized LDL (oxLDL) via a cellular antioxidant defence system.

Mechanisms linking colorectal cancer to the consumption of (processed) red meat : a review [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the world. The vast majority of CRC cases have been linked to environmental causes rather than to heritable genetic changes.

Nanodiamond Quantum Sensors for Probing Free Radical Biology

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Free radicals play key roles in cellular signaling and disease but remain difficult to measure in living systems. Nanodiamonds (NDs) with nitrogen‐vacancy (NV) centers enable quantum sensing of local magnetic noise via T₁ relaxometry, providing nondestructive radical detection in living cells.

Oxidants and antioxidants in atherogenesis: an appraisal

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1999
Oxidized low density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) has a plethora of components that are not present in native LDL. Their presence and quantity depends on the nature, type, and extent of oxidation.

Ultrasmall Platinum Nanoparticles for Radiation‐Enhanced Cancer Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This work proposes a nanomedicine‐based strategy to enhance X‐ray radiotherapy for cancer treatment. Ultrasmall Pt‐NPs exhibit catalase‐like activity that may contribute to modulation of the tumor microenvironment and amplify interactions between radiation and biological matter, leading to increased DNA damage.

Reactive Oxygen Species, Lipid Peroxidation and Antioxidative Defense Mechanism

open access: yesNotulae Botanicae Horti Agrobotanici Cluj-Napoca, 2013
Lipid peroxidation can be defined as the oxidative deterioration of lipids containing any number of carbon-carbon double bonds. Lipid peroxidation is a well-established mechanism of cellular injury in both plants and animals, and is used as an indicator ...
