Filamentous phages as building blocks for reconfigurable and hierarchical self-assembly

open access: yes, 2017
Filamentous bacteriophages such as fd-like viruses are monodisperse rod-like colloids that have well defined properties: diameter, length, rigidity, charge and chirality. Engineering those viruses leads to a library of colloidal rods which can be used as

Aberrant Mitochondrial Metabolism in Alzheimer's Disease Links Energy Stress with Ferroptosis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Alves et al. reveal how energy loss and oxidative stress, two major features of Alzheimer's disease, are connected. Mitochondria controls the flux of the antioxidant glutathione (GSH), via facilitating both its production and consumption. Energy restriction limits GSH synthesis, conferring vulnerability to cell death by ferroptosis, implicated as a ...

Cholesterol Efflux Decreases TLR4-Target Gene Expression in Cultured Macrophages Exposed to T. brucei Ghosts

open access: yesMicroorganisms
Trypanosoma brucei causes African trypanosomiasis in humans. Infection with T. brucei elicits a potent pro-inflammatory immune response within infected human hosts, and this response is thought to at least be partially due to Toll-like receptor (TLR ...

Editorial: Lipid Rafts and Amyloidogenesis [PDF]

open access: yesThe Open Biology Journal, 2010
Lipid Rafts and Amyloidogenesis Lipid rafts are the membrane microdomains enriched in cholesterol and sphingolipids, which play important roles in such cellular processes as protein sorting and signal transduction.

Microwave‐Activated Bacterial Biorobot for Multimodal Cancer Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An Escherichia coli bacterial biorobot is engineered for localized microwave activation in cancer therapy. Upon activation at tumor sites, the biorobot releases glucose oxidase, inducing tumor cell death via glucose depletion and H2O2 generation catalyzed by Cu2O.

Cascade‐Targeted Nanoparticles for Enhanced Gemcitabine Delivery and Adenosine Metabolism Modulation to Overcome Treatment Resistance in Pancreatic Cancer

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The aberrant adenosine metabolism leads to chemoresistance and immunosuppressive microenvironment. A versatile albumin‐polyplexes conjugated nanoparticle B‐PDEA@CPA is prepare for the codelivery of gemcitabine and siCD39. The nanoparticle releases gemcitabine‐loaded albumin upon microenvironment to achieve promoted penetration and cellular uptake ...

Shiga toxin glycosphingolipid receptors in microvascular and macrovascular endothelial cells: differential association with membrane lipid raft microdomains[S]

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2011
Vascular damage caused by Shiga toxin (Stx)-producing Escherichia coli is largely mediated by Stxs, which in particular, injure microvascular endothelial cells in the kidneys and brain.

Decoy Extracellular Vesicles Overcome Triple‐Negative Breast Cancer Heterogeneity via Membrane‐Cytoplasm‐Mitochondria Cascade Targeting

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
siT/MOF@EVs overcome TNBC heterogeneity through a tumor cell membrane–cytoplasm–mitochondria cascade effect, triggering a self‐reinforcing anti‐tumor immune cycle and durable immune memory. The system enables sequential targeting of membrane checkpoints ligands (decoy effect), cytoplasmic siRNA delivery (CSC suppression), and mitochondrial MOF ...

Macrophage ABCA1 reduces MyD88-dependent Toll-like receptor trafficking to lipid rafts by reduction of lipid raft cholesterol[S]

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2010
We previously showed that macrophages from macrophage-specific ATP-binding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1) knockout (Abca1-M/-M) mice had an enhanced proinflammatory response to the Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4 agonist, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), compared ...

Novel Swelling‐Lytic Cell Death Triggered by Cargo‐Free Ionizable Lipid Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A cargo‐free ionizable lipid nanoparticles (ipLNP) is found to induce broad swelling‐lytic cell death across multiple cell types. Cell death may be associated with lysosome membrane destabilization, involving ROS increase, lipid peroxidation, and GSDME cleavage.
