Activity of antifilarial drugs on microfilaremia in the treatment of loiasis: a systematic review. [PDF]

open access: yesParasit Vectors
Loiasis, caused by the nematode/filaria Loa loa, presents a major health burden in Central and West Africa. Despite the growing recognition of loiasis’ medical significance, current antifilarial drugs remain inadequate in terms of efficacy and safety ...

Delayed-Onset Loiasis: A Case of Loa loa Infection Diagnosed Six Years Post-exposure. [PDF]

open access: yesCureus
Loiasis, caused by Loa loa, is a filarial infection endemic to Central and West Africa, increasingly recognized in non-endemic regions due to global migration and travel.

Disability and quality of life assessment using WHODAS-12 items 2.0 and EQ-5D-5L in a rural area endemic for loiasis in the Republic of Congo: A population-based cross-sectional study (the MorLo project). [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Negl Trop Dis
Background Loa loa filariasis, a parasitic infection endemic to Central Africa, is a common cause of medical consultation in this region. Methods To evaluate the quality of life (QoL) of individuals living in loiasis-endemic areas, we enrolled 991 ...

A cross-sectional investigation of the ophthalmological impact of loiasis in Cameroon, Central Africa. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS Negl Trop Dis
Background Current knowledge of ocular manifestations of loiasis is limited to the transient subconjunctival passage of the adult filaria and anecdotal reports of posterior segment lesions. Therefore, the ocular burden of loiasis is likely underestimated

Programmed cell death pathways as targets for developing antifilarial drugs: Lessons from the recent findings

open access: yesJournal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Volume 27, Issue 19, Page 2819-2840, October 2023., 2023
Abstract More than half a century has passed since the introduction of the National Filariasis Control Program; however, as of 2023, lymphatic filariasis (LF) still prevails globally, particularly in the tropical and subtropical regions, posing a substantial challenge to the objective of worldwide elimination.

The Impact of Mass Drug Administration on Lymphatic Filariasis

open access: yesJournal of Tropical Medicine, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
Mass drug administration (MDA) has made a significant impact on the control of lymphatic filariasis (LF) since the establishment of the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis. However, its implementation is associated with several challenges, hampering interruption of parasite transmission and LF elimination in endemic areas.

An Adult Loa loa Worm in the Upper Eyelid: An Atypical Presentation of Loiasis in the United States

open access: yesCase Reports in Ophthalmological Medicine, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
Purpose. To report a case of ocular involvement of Loa loa parasite. Observations. We present a rare case report of a Loiasis diagnosed in the United States from a patient presenting with subcutaneous migration of an adult worm within an eyelid who was found to have systemic disease with microfilaria in his blood.

Compliance to a Five‐Year Biannual Ivermectin Treatment for Onchocerciasis Elimination and Its Determinants among Adults in the Bench Maji Zone, Southwest Ethiopia: A Community‐Based Cross‐Sectional Study

open access: yesJournal of Parasitology Research, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
Background. Community‐directed treatment with ivermectin twice a year is a major action to control onchocerciasis in endemic countries. Even though the community‐directed treatment with ivermectin was proven effective in treating the disease, the level of compliance to the treatment and its contributing factors was not well addressed in our study area.

Collateral Impact of Community-Directed Treatment with Ivermectin (CDTI) for Onchocerciasis on Parasitological Indicators of Loa loa Infection

open access: yesPathogens, 2020
Ivermectin (IVM) is a broad spectrum endectocide whose initial indication was onchocerciasis. Although loiasis is not among its indications, IVM also exhibits antiparasitic activity against Loa loa.

Reference values for cardiac dimensions and function in a rural population living in a loiasis-endemic area of the Republic of the Congo: An echocardiographic study. [PDF]

open access: yesNat Commun
Echocardiography is crucial for diagnosis and management of cardiac diseases. Existing reference values may not be applicable to rural African populations due ethnicity related variability and limited data.
