Selective autophagy pathways in ageing and neurodegeneration: Emerging roles for mitophagy and nucleophagy

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
As we age, cells gradually accumulate damage, which can contribute to disease and neurodegeneration. This review explores how two cellular recycling processes, mitophagy and nucleophagy, remove damaged mitochondria and nuclear material, respectively, to maintain cell health and long‐term neuronal homeostasis.

Epigenetic control of cellular plasticity in breast cancer progression

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Cancer cells undergo cell state transitions, termed plasticity, driving cancer progression and dictating therapeutic response. We define breast cancer plasticity into four interconnected processes: (1) breast cancer stem cell fates, (2) epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition, (3) maintenance of luminal identity, and (4) acquisition of therapeutic ...

The H19/miR‐760/BST2 regulatory axis sustains breast cancer tumorigenesis and metastasis

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
H19 and BST2 promote breast cancer aggressiveness through their reciprocal coregulation by miR‐760. Since both transcripts are targeted by miR‐760, overexpression of one sequesters the microRNA and relieves repression of the other: H19 raises BST2 levels, and BST2 raises H19 levels.

Toward a minimal amino acid alphabet for protein design

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Proteins are built from 20 canonical amino acids; however, it is interesting to investigate whether they can also be formed from reduced amino acid alphabets. Using protein design, we designed proteins based on all alphabets comprising 2 to 10 ‘early’ amino acids (those likely to have been present before the origin of life).

A guide to host genetic determinants of female microbiome composition across distinct anatomical niches

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
Host genetic variation in immune regulation and cell signalling genes was associated with microbiome composition across vaginal, gut, oral and skin sites, while associations involving metabolic function, epithelial barrier integrity and hormonal processes were more site‐specific. Overall, our findings indicate that host genetic variation contributes to
