The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Families as catalysts for peer adherence support in enhancing hope for people living with HIV/AIDS in South Africa

open access: yesJournal of the International AIDS Society, 2014
Introduction Hope is an essential dimension of successful coping in the context of illnesses such as HIV/AIDS, because positive expectations for the future alleviate emotional distress, enhance quality of life and have been linked to the capacity for ...

Influence of shower fluctuations and primary composition on studies of the shower longitudinal development

open access: yes, 2004
We study the influence of shower fluctuations, and the possible presence of different nuclear species in the primary cosmic ray spectrum, on the experimental determination of both shower energy and the proton air inelastic cross section from studies of ...

Blood‐based proteomic profiling reveals context‐dependent changes in BCL2‐associated signaling during taxane therapy in breast cancer patients

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Chemotherapy side effects significantly impact cancer survivors' quality of life. Using protein levels in blood samples from breast cancer patients before and after 12 weeks of taxane treatment, we detected treatment‐dependent changes in calcium signaling and aging pathways associated with cancer recurrence.

Searching for a mitochondrial root to the decline in muscle function with ageing

open access: yesJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, 2018
Sarcopenia, the age‐related loss of muscle mass and strength, is linked to a range of adverse outcomes, such as impaired physical performance, cognitive function, and mortality. Preventing sarcopenia may reduce the burden of functional decline with aging

Betatron modulation of microwave instability in small isochronous ring

open access: yes, 2013
A novel coupling of the transverse betatron motion to the longitudinal microwave instability is studied. Besides the radial coherent dipole mode space charge field, simulation and theoretical studies in this paper show that the longitudinal coherent ...

Bayesian modeling longitudinal dyadic data with nonignorable dropout, with application to a breast cancer study

open access: yes, 2012
Dyadic data are common in the social and behavioral sciences, in which members of dyads are correlated due to the interdependence structure within dyads. The analysis of longitudinal dyadic data becomes complex when nonignorable dropouts occur.

Long‐term hippocampal alterations and cognitive impairment in a murine model of surgical sepsis

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Using a mouse model of surgical sepsis, we tested long‐term memory and analyzed the transcriptome of single cells isolated from the hippocampus. Survivor mice showed worse memory, loss of certain brain cell subpopulations, and abnormal immune cell activity—suggesting that post‐sepsis brain alterations may be linked to cognitive deficits.

Early‐life high‐fat diet exposure increases Achilles tendon stiffness and induces transcriptomic alterations

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Early‐life exposure to a high‐fat diet altered intact Achilles tendons in rat offspring, making them thinner, stiffer, and molecularly distinct even without injury. These findings suggest that developmental high‐fat diet exposure may impair tendon quality and increase susceptibility to mechanical overload or tendon injury later in life.
