Macrophage migration inhibitory factor

Expert Opinion on Therapeutic Targets, 2003
Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a ubiquitous protein that is found in virtually all cells. Its precise function in the majority of cells is not known, but studies performed over the last decade indicate that it is a critical upstream regulator of the innate and acquired immune response.

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor

Critical Care Medicine, 2002
Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) has been proposed to be the physiologic counter-regulator of glucocorticoid action within the immune system. In this role, MIF's position within the cytokine cascade is to act in concert with glucocorticoids to control both the "set point" and the magnitude of the inflammatory response. As well as overriding

Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor in Cancer

Cancer Investigation, 2007
The objective of this study was to investigate the expression of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) in patients with colorectal cancer (GIS) and malignant melanoma (MM). The study group consists of pathologically verified colorectal cancer (n = 63) and malignant melanoma (n = 65) patients and healthy controls (n = 25).

Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor in Uveitis

International Ophthalmology Clinics, 2002
To summarize, we found that high levels of MIF were detected in the serum of uveitis patients with Behçet's disease, VKH disease, and sarcoidosis, as well as idiopathic iridocyclitis. In Behçet's disease and sarcoidosis, the MIF levels were higher in the active uveitis stage than in the inactive stage.

GLUCOCORTICOID SUPPRESSION OF MACROPHAGE MIGRATION INHIBITORY FACTOR [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Medicine, 1973
The ability of hydrocortisone to modify antigen-mediated inhibition of macrophage migration, an in vitro correlate of cellular immunity in the guinea pig, was investigated. Only the glucocorticoids, hydrocortisone and dexamethasone, significantly blocked migration inhibitory factor (MIF) activity in pharmacologic concentrations.

Migration inhibitory factors and macrophage differentiation

Springer Seminars in Immunopathology, 1984
It has been described before that only certain types of macrophages are capable to respond to lymphokines and that only certain macrophage phenotypes were able to migrate and to respond to migration inhibitory factors (MIF). With respect to the dissociation of MIF activities from a series of other biological activities, and with regard to the phenotype-

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor in rheumatoid arthritis

Frontiers in Bioscience, 2005
Rheumatoid arthritis is characterised by the interaction of multiple mediators, among the most important of which are cytokines. In recent years, extensive data demonstrates a pivotal role for one cytokine, macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF), in fundamental events in innate and adaptive immunity.

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor and oral cancer

Journal of Oral Pathology & Medicine, 2012
BackgroundMacrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a pleiotropic cytokine with pro‐inflammatory functions and involved in tumorigenesis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the expression and localization of the macrophage MIF in oral squamous carcinoma (OSC).

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor in female sterility

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1975
Cellular sensitization against spermatozoa as antigen was studied in 21 fertile and 41 infertile female subjects. In addition, 20 virgin girls and a group of 11 women presenting positive spermagglutinating (in equal 8) and immobilizing (n equal 3) antibodies were investigated.
