Magmites - wireless resonant magnetic microrobots

2008 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, 2008
Primary challenges in the building of untethered sub-millimeter sized robots include power supply, propulsion methods, and control. We present a novel type of microrobot termed Magmite that utilizes a new class of wireless magnetic actuator which accomplishes all three tasks.

Magnetic microrobots with addressable shape control

2016 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), 2016
Shape shifting soft microrobots are generated from self-folding hydrogel bilayer structures. The folding conditions are analyzed to develop an optimal strategy for producing desired three-dimensional shapes. We present two different methods for programming magnetization in these microrobots that are variant and invariant to folding. The microrobots can

Bioinspired soft microrobots actuated by magnetic field

Biomedical Microdevices, 2021
In contrast to traditional large-scale robots, which require complicated mechanical joints and material rigidity, microrobots made of soft materials have exhibited amazing features and great potential for extensive applications, such as minimally invasive surgery.

Towards Functional Mobile Magnetic Microrobots

2014
This chapter covers some fundamental work towards realizing functional mobile magnetic microrobots. First, the theoretical fundamentals of electromagnetism are presented. Second, an electromagnetic testbed design for controlling mobile magnetic microrobots is described.

Walking of a magnetically bipedal microrobot

2011 16th International Solid-State Sensors, Actuators and Microsystems Conference, 2011
Magnetic microrobots with walking capability are reported. A magnetic object subjected to an externally magnetic field would be attracted and rotated due to the interaction between the field and the induced internal magnetization. Based on this principle, a magnetic microrobot with two legs was designed and fabricated. To remotely power and control the

Development of rolling magnetic microrobots

Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering, 2010
This paper reports magnetic microrobots with rolling capability. A magnetic object subjected to an externally rotating magnetic field would be rotated due to the tendency of alignment between its internal magnetization and the field. Based on this principle, a magnetic microrobot in a spherical body with a diameter of several hundred microns was ...

Sperm-templated magnetic microrobots

2019 International Conference on Manipulation, Automation and Robotics at Small Scales (MARSS), 2019
Spermatozoa are efficient microswimmers which perform a bending wave motion for their forward propulsion. By binding positively charged iron oxide microparticles to the surface of negatively charged bull spermatozoa, we fabricate sperm-templated biohybrid magnetic microrobots.

Polymer-based Wireless Resonant Magnetic microrobots

2012 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, 2012
We present a class of Wireless Resonant Magnetic Microactuator (WRMMA) that integrates a polymer spring/body structure with electroplated ferromagnetic masses. The new devices, which we call PolyMites as they are derived from our previous MagMites, are simpler, faster and cheaper to fabricate than the MagMite.

Assessment of protein binding with magnetic microrobots in fluid

2013 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, 2013
For applications such as targeting therapeutic nanocarriers to specific tissues, as well as for the more general problem of assessing binding affinity between proteins, it is important to discover tools which may be used for both micromanipulation as well as force microscopy.
