Cluster observations of the midaltitude cusp under strong northward interplanetary magnetic field [PDF]
We report on a multispacecraft cusp observation lasting more than 100 min. We determine the cusp boundary motion and reveal the effect on the cusp size of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) changing from southward to northward.

Studying Magnetic Reconnection with Synchrotron Polarization Statistics
Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental process for releasing magnetic energy in space physics and astrophysics. At present, the usual way to investigate the reconnection process is through analytical studies or first-principle numerical simulations. This

Open magnetic flux and magnetic flux closure during sawtooth events [PDF]
peer reviewedWe use IMAGE-FUV observations of the polar aurora and measurements of the ionospheric convection from the SuperDARN radar network to study several sawtooth events previously reported in the literature. We estimate the amount of open magnetic

The Magnetic Reconnection Code: Center for Magnetic Reconnection Studies [PDF]
Understanding magnetic reconnection is one of the principal challenges in plasma physics. Reconnection is a process by which magnetic fields reconfigure themselves, releasing energy that can be converted to particle energies and bulk flows. Thanks to the availability of sophisticated diagnostics in fusion and laboratory experiments, in situ probing of ...

Formation and motion of a transpolar arc in response to dayside and nightside reconnection [PDF]
peer reviewed[ 1] We trace the formation and subsequent motion of a transpolar arc in response to dayside and nightside reconnection. Both high- and low-latitude dayside reconnection are observed, as well as periods of substorm and nonsubstorm nightside ...
