In silico simulations and functional cell studies evidence similar potency and distinct binding of pacific and caribbean ciguatoxins [PDF]
Ciguatoxins (CTX) cause ciguatera poisoning, which is the most common reported human food poisoning related to natural marine toxins. Pacific ciguatoxins are the most abundant and studied CTX analogues; however, the growing distribution of Caribbean ...

Blockade of maitotoxin-induced oncotic cell death reveals zeiosis [PDF]
Maitotoxin (MTX) initiates cell death by sequentially activating 1) Ca2+ influx via non-selective cation channels, 2) uptake of vital dyes via formation of large pores, and 3) release of lactate dehydrogenase, an indication of cell lysis. MTX also causes formation of membrane blebs, which dramatically dilate during the cytolysis phase. To determine the

NLRP3: A Novel Mediator in Cardiovascular Disease
Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of death worldwide. Inflammasome infiltration has been identified to play a central role in the pathological progression of certain cardiovascular diseases, such as vascular damage spanning atherosclerosis, aneurysm, or arteritis; ischemic heart disease; and other nonischemic heart diseases including diabetic ...

Cell Death‐Associated Molecular‐Pattern Molecules: Inflammatory Signaling and Control
Apoptosis, necroptosis, and pyroptosis are different cellular death programs characterized in organs and tissues as consequence of microbes infection, cell stress, injury, and chemotherapeutics exposure. Dying and death cells release a variety of self‐proteins and bioactive chemicals originated from cytosol, nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum, and ...

Spatiotemporal distribution of phycotoxins and their co-occurrence within nearshore waters [PDF]
Harmful algal blooms (HABs), varying in intensity and causative species, have historically occurred throughout the Chesapeake Bay, U.S.; however, phycotoxin data are sparse.

Crohn′s disease is a complex disease in which genome, microbiome, and environment interact to produce the immunological background of the disease. Disease in childhood is more extensive and characterized by a rapid progression, leading to severe repercussions in the course of the disorder.

Abstract Exposure to cadmium results in disturbances in cell homeostasis in all living organisms. The first response to stress factors, including cadmium, is activation of signal transduction pathways that mobilize cell defense mechanisms. The aim of this review is a comparison between the signaling network triggered by Cd in plants and animals ...

Inhibition of Maitotoxin‐Induced Ca2+ Influx in Rat Glioma C6 Cells by Brevetoxins and Synthetic Fragments of Maitotoxin [PDF]
Abstract: 45Ca2+ influx in rat glioma C6 cells induced by 0.3 nM maitotoxin (MTX) was markedly inhibited by brevetoxin A (PbTx1) and brevetoxin B (PbTx2), with EC50 values of 16 and 13 µM, respectively. This inhibition was observed immediately after addition of MTX when monitored with fura‐2, which suggests that PbTx2 directly blocks the action of MTX.
