Edges as ecological filters: Asymmetrical orientation‐specific arthropod activity across forest boundaries

Moderate retention forestry creates structurally sharp forest edges that act as ecological filters, shaping orientation‐specific activity of ground‐dwelling arthropods. Using drift‐fence pitfall traps, we show that activity aligned with ecotones is more frequent than activity across forest–clearcut boundaries, particularly among detritivores.

A RELATION BETWEEN MALT EXTRACT AND MALTING TIME AND THE TWO-STAGE NATURE OF THE MALTING PROCESS [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the Institute of Brewing, 1968
An equation relating the extract of malt and malting time is established empirically. Application of this relationship to micro- and large-scale maltings reveals the two-stage nature of the malting process. It is suggested that the second, or modification, stage of malting is controlled by a diffusion process.

Effect of the microbiome on pathogen susceptibility across four Drosophilidae species

Four Drosophilidae species were used to investigate how variation in the host microbiome influences susceptibility to infection. Microbial composition and abundance differed among species and treatments. The effects of microbiome manipulation on host survival were both species‐ and pathogen‐specific.

A rapid and simple method for the determination of the carbohydrate fraction of the Cold Water Extract of malts is described. The extraction is preceded by treatment of the malt with barium hydroxide, which is then removed by precipitation with zinc sulphate. This both deactivates enzymes and prevents solubilization of protein.
