Resistance Rapid Heating of Aluminum Coatings in an Extreme High Vacuum–Adequate Atmosphere for Hot Stamping

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The subject of this work is the development of a corrosion‐protective coating on steel sheets for form hardening. Rapid heating in an extreme high vacuum (XHV)‐adequate atmosphere is a useful method to prevent oxidation during alloying of 22MnB5 and aluminum to obtain a metallurgical bonding.

Laser ultrasonic detection for defects of LAM components based on variable time window intensity mapping with adaptive 2σ thresholds

open access: yesPhotoacoustics
Metallurgical defects in metal laser additive manufacturing (LAM) are inevitable due to complex non-equilibrium thermodynamics. A laser ultrasonic system was designed for detecting surface/near-surface defects in the layer-by-layer LAM process.

Pyramidal Structures on Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia after High Temperature Exposure at 1500°C: New Features on an Old Material

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
New features on yttria‐stabilized zirconia after exposure at 1500°C: Newly discovered pyramidal structures on an old material. After exposure at 1550°C on the cross section of YSZ new features, namely pyramidal structures are discovered. These structures grow with time, increase in numbers, appear as singularities, are often arranged in strings, and ...

Defects and Mechanical Properties of Silicon Nitride Ball Bearings for Electric Vehicle Reducers

open access: yesWorld Electric Vehicle Journal
In this study, two types of Si3N4 ball bearings for integrated-type EV reducers developed via different manufacturing processes were analyzed to study the microstructure of the balls and the defects that may occur during the manufacturing process.

A Knowledge‐Based Approach for Understanding and Managing Additive Manufacturing Data

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing processes generate a large amount of data. Effectively managing, understanding, and retrieving information from this data remains a major challenge. Therefore, we propose an ontology‐based approach to integrate heterogeneous data, enable semantic queries, and support decision‐making.

Surface Tension Measurement of Ti‐6Al‐4V by Falling Droplet Method in Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this article, the temperature‐dependent surface tension of free falling, oscillating Ti‐6Al‐4V droplets is investigated in both argon and monosilane doped, oxygen‐free atmosphere. Droplet temperature and oscillation are captured with one single high‐speed camera, and the surface tension is calculated with Rayleigh's formula.

An integrated multiscale simulation guiding the processing optimisation for additively manufactured nickel-based superalloys

open access: yesVirtual and Physical Prototyping
Microstructural defects in laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) metallic materials are correlated with processing parameters. A multi-physics model and a crystal plasticity framework are employed to predict microstructure growth in molten pools and assess the ...

Techniques to Address Manufacturing Defects in Deep Sub-micron

open access: yes, 2022
Shrinking transistor sizes has resulted in increased manufacturing defects. Therefore, an efficient and accurate method is essential to test and diagnose such defects in an Integrated Circuit (IC).

Creating Ti–Fe α/β Alloys by Diffusion‐Driven Solid‐State Processing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study proposes making alloys containing fast diffusing elements that are difficult to produce by ingot metallurgy, by diffusion‐driven solid‐state HIP processing of elemental powders and low‐temperature homogenisation. Here, novel Fe‐Ti α–β alloys are formed having fine α–β lamellae, a small β prior grain size without significant intermetallics ...
