The Parkinson's progression markers initiative (PPMI) – establishing a PD biomarker cohort

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, 2018
The Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) is an observational, international study designed to establish biomarker‐defined cohorts and identify clinical, imaging, genetic, and biospecimen Parkinson's disease (PD) progression markers to ...

Using marker-maps in marker-assisted selection

open access: yesGenetical Research, 1995
SummaryA method of using information on the location of markers to improve the efficiency of markerassisted selection (MAS) in a population produced by a cross between two inbred lines is developed. The method is closer to mapping QTL than the selection index approaches to MAS described by previous authors.

Hematopoietic (stem) cells—The elixir of life?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The aging of HSCs (hematopoietic stem cells) and the blood system leads to the decline of other organs. Rejuvenating aged HSCs improves the function of the blood system, slowing the aging of the heart, kidney, brain, and liver, and the occurrence of age‐related diseases.

International effort toward a SSR-based linkage map for C. clementina : [P128] [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Following the difficulties encountered for assembling a 1.2 x sequencing of the highly heterozygous sweet orange genome, the International Citrus Genomic Consortium (ICOC) decided to estab1ish the first reference sequence of a whole nuclear citrus genome

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Understanding the Mysterious M2 Macrophage through Activation Markers and Effector Mechanisms

open access: yesMediators of Inflammation, 2015
The alternatively activated or M2 macrophages are immune cells with high phenotypic heterogeneity and are governing functions at the interface of immunity, tissue homeostasis, metabolism, and endocrine signaling.

Molecular bases of circadian magnesium rhythms across eukaryotes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Circadian rhythms in intracellular [Mg2+] exist across eukaryotic kingdoms. Central roles for Mg2+ in metabolism suggest that Mg2+ rhythms could regulate daily cellular energy and metabolism. In this Perspective paper, we propose that ancestral prokaryotic transport proteins could be responsible for mediating Mg2+ rhythms and posit a feedback model ...

Impact of Steroid Receptors, pS2 and Cathepsin D on the Outcome of N+ Postmenopausal Breast Cancer Patients Treated with Tamoxifen

open access: yesThe International Journal of Biological Markers, 1998
In spite of the complexity of the biological basis of the hormonal regulation of breast cancer, clinical studies tend to simplify the information by mainly categorizing continuous variables related to hormonal status and not considering the interactions ...

Peptide‐based ligand antagonists block a Vibrio cholerae adhesin

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The structure of a peptide‐binding domain of the Vibrio cholerae adhesin FrhA was solved by X‐ray crystallography, revealing how the inhibitory peptide AGYTD binds tightly at its Ca2+‐coordinated pocket. Structure‐guided design incorporating D‐amino acids enhanced binding affinity, providing a foundation for developing anti‐adhesion therapeutics ...
