Vegetation patterns pinpoint the least resilient dryland sites
Abstract Resource‐limited ecosystems, such as drylands, can exhibit self‐organized spatial patterns. Theory suggests that changes in these patterns can inform about the ecosystem degradation level. While the current theory is expected to work well when following a given site in time, we still lack ways of comparing different field sites using static ...

A multiscale growth atlas of Arabidopsis: linking cell dynamics to organ development
Summary Plant development depends on coordinated growth at cellular and organ scales, yet comparative analyses are hindered by inconsistent reporting of growth across studies. We conducted a meta‐analysis of Arabidopsis thaliana growth dynamics, integrating data from 176 studies to create the first multiscale atlas of plant growth.

Cartan--Whitney Presentation, Non-smooth Analysis and Smoothability of Manifolds: On a theorem of Kondo--Tanaka [PDF]
Using tools and results from geometric measure theory, we give a simple new proof of the main result (Theorem 1.3) in K. Kondo and M. Tanaka, Approximation of Lipschitz Maps via Immersions and Differentiable Exotic Sphere Theorems, \textit{Nonlinear Anal.

Predicting financial markets with Google Trends and not so random keywords
We check the claims that data from Google Trends contain enough data to predict future financial index returns. We first discuss the many subtle (and less subtle) biases that may affect the backtest of a trading strategy, particularly when based on such ...

The quenched limiting distributions of a one-dimensional random walk in random scenery
For a one-dimensional random walk in random scenery (RWRS) on Z, we determine its quenched weak limits by applying Strassen's functional law of the iterated logarithm. As a consequence, conditioned on the random scenery, the one-dimensional RWRS does not
