Schooling Trajectories and the Development of Brain Dynamics: A Comparative Study of Montessori and Traditional Education

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We investigate whether Montessori and traditional schooling systems shape the developmental trajectory of large‐scale brain dynamics in different ways. We quantify the arrow of time (“non‐reversibility”) in neural activity during resting state and movie‐watching, revealing distinct maturational patterns.

When approximate number acuity predicts math performance: The moderating role of math anxiety. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Separate lines of research suggest that people who are better at estimating numerical quantities using the approximate number system (ANS) have better math performance, and that people with high levels of math anxiety have worse math performance.

The rain feels different under the same umbrella: Experiences with poverty across LGBTQ subgroups

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Community Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract Population‐based survey data have demonstrated that LGBTQ communities report varying rates of economic insecurity, yet very little research directly assesses how pathways into and experiences with poverty look different among subgroups at the intersections of sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI).

Can I Count on Getting Better? Association between Math Anxiety and Poorer Understanding of Medical Risk Reductions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Lower numerical ability is associated with poorer understanding of health statistics, such as risk reductions of medical treatment. For many people, despite good numeracy skills, math provokes anxiety that impedes an ability to evaluate numerical ...

Measuring Child Disadvantage: Comparing Multidimensional and Socioeconomic Approaches for Predicting Developmental Outcomes

open access: yesAustralian Journal of Social Issues, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Robust measurement of disadvantage is essential to identifying and addressing inequities in children's development. We tested how a multidimensional framework of child disadvantage performed relative to a traditional socioeconomic position (SEP) approach to predict developmental outcomes.

Does anxiety explain why math-anxious people underperform in math?

open access: yesnpj Science of Learning, 2023
Math-anxious people consistently underperform in math. The most widely accepted explanation for why this underperformance occurs is that math-anxious people experience heightened anxiety when faced with math, and this in-the-moment anxiety interferes ...
